2000 GC Transfer Case

Hi,
We have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo v8 with 131K on it. Very mint jeep for the year. We bought it 1 1/2 year ago. Ever since we bought it the Quadra-Drive? or Quadra-Trac II? (I will look when wife gets home to find out what we have.) ONLY would work after the jeep was warmed up. (Driving it around). Before we would move after getting some snow we can put it in 4 low and the front tires will grab and pull us right out. Lately driving down the road I can spin the rear tires and the front ones will not engage. (Before they would)
Do you guys think if I changed the transfer case gear fluid would fix it? or should I am leaning towards doing it right the first time and put a Jeep New Process NP247 Transfer Case Rebuild Kit 99-ON in it. Of course putting new Mopar 247 TC fluid in it. This spring I am doing a full tune up to it. So I can rebuild the transfer case also. Since it had 125K on it when we bought it I like doing pre-maintenance. I have been doing mechanic work for 25 years or so. I DO NOT work in a garage though. I'm just very mechanical incline. I've done alot of big jobs. One is I did my head gasket in my Venture van so I know I can fix this. Sorry for so long.
I'm not sure if there is any sensors on it? What do you guys think?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thank you, Dan

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

The repair kit is nice, but doesn´t have the part which is not working. The problem is the progressive coupler inside the T-case (at least when i understood well that 4-Lo still works). You probably better look for a good second hand one or install a 242 T-case which lets you select 4-Hi manually.
No sensors on the NV 247.

Thank you Frank for responding so quickly. The 4 low works great.
Ball park figure on a new coupling? And it is a pain to rebuild the transfer case? Or just better off install a 242 T? I would like it better if I put it 4 hi manually. If I go that route is a pain to change them out? Sorry for asking these questions but I have never done this before. What would you do?
Thanks, Dan

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

Found 1 only 7 miles from me for $250.00. Came from 2003 with 90K on it. It's a 242HD with Selec-Trac . Think I will buy it this weekend. And have it to install this spring.
So I get this right.
Selec-Trac = Putting it in 4 wheel drive manually. (Front tires grabbing)
Quadra-Drive or Trac? (whatever I have). = when the rear tires spin the front SHOULD grab.
Am I correct? And what I have read a lot of people are putting in the 242HD. Under $500.00 with everything I need to do this job?
I have seen a lot of 242 with 4.0 engines. Do I have to find one that has a 4.7 engine to fit mine? I have the 4.7 (v8) engine.
Will I have 4 low also?
Thanks, Dan

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

Never did this swap myself, but heard several speaking about it. The progressive coupler in the 247 is very expensive, around USD500, so putting a good 242 in seems to be a better option.
Indeed 247 is fulltime 4x4 with torque to the front wheels when there is a speed difference between front and rear prop shafts.
242 is manual 4x4 hi, but has also 4 lo.

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

Thank you for the help. I will do the swap. I will take some pics when I do and post them. I won't do this until it's warm out. lol

Thank you again, Dan

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

I did the swap about 6 years ago.

You can only use the Tcase from the WJ that had a V8. (01-03 models only, I think).
I also had to get the driveshaft because the lengths are different.
Lastly, you'll need to get the shifter assy. You can NOT get just the bezel (you could if you want to cut it). You have to get the whole assy.

The shifter assy is not a requirement, but it's nice to know exactly what you're shifting into visually.

Re: 2000 GC Transfer Case

I thought i had a bad transfer, when I went ahead and swapped my 545rfe's the Tcase of course has to come out, while it was out I performed a bench test and it works 4hi, N,4lo. I went to the front axle and spun the yoke and 0 wheel spin, great my front diff is fubared. So atleast I know my Tcase is in good working condition even though the oil inside smells like tar and flows like tar.
