2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting to a forum so be patient! I've been battling this problem on and off for the past couple weeks and it is driving me crazy! The problem is as follows:
-when trying to start it will crank longer than usual and start but immediately drops to about 300 RPGs and sputters until I give it some throttle
-when in drive, park, or neutral, my RPGs will surge going from about 800 (which is my usual resting) down to 300 and again sputters like it is going to stall
-will stall in reverse from time to time depending on speed
-really rough idle at stop lights
I do not have any codes thrown and this problem is a bit and miss. One day it'll happen then the next time I try to start it it fires right up! It's really frustrating because I feel like it could be so many things.
-I've replaced my fuel filter, spark plugs, and crankshaft sensor all in the past couple months.
Any information would be fantastic because I am ready to give up! Thanks to whoever could give me some insight!

Welcome to the garage. Have a look at the IAC plunjer first. If dirty, clean it and the air canal. If this seems to be ok, then it could be the TPS.

Frango100 would I be safe using carb cleaner? I plan on doing this in the morning and have some carb cleaner on hand.

Re: 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L

You will have to remove the IAC stepper motor and clean the plunjer well. Carb cleaner can be used, it should only not touch the O´ring. If it does, the o´ring will become much larger and will not fit anymore. You can use the carb cleaner in the air canal itself without a problem.
