2000 WJ / All brakes lights malfunctioning

Help! I cannot imagine all 3 bulbs blew at once, but frankly I have not yet looked at each bulb. To date I have changed the 15amp fuse in my interior panel although it was not visibly blown. Next, I replaced my brake pressure switch, still no glory. The original brake pressure switch seemed like the plunger was short-stroking, but replacing it still did not fix my problem. If it helps, when I engage my brake pedal, my lights do not black out completely. I still have the other filament staying lit, the one that lights when the headlights are on, in both rear light assemblies. One last detail, I do have a professionally installed trailer brake assist installed and one connector is on the pigtail of the brake pressure switch. This was put in two years ago. Suggestions?

Re: 2000 WJ / All brakes lights malfunctioning

Did you adjust the plunjer of the brake lamp switch?
The left and right light assies use different grounds, so i would discard that possibility for now. I would start measuring voltage at pin 6 of the brake lamp switch connector. If ok (12V), then put a jumper wire between pin 5 and 6 of the brake lamp switch connector. If still nothing, then measure for voltage at one of the rear light assies, pin 6 of both assies should have 12V when brakes are applied.

Re: 2000 WJ / All brakes lights malfunctioning

Hello Frango100, thanks for your help.
I was able to get 12.4V from pin6 at the brake switch. Then added the jumper to pin5 and pin6and got 13.6V in the driver-side brake ass'y pin6. At least I think it was pin6 since there are no numbers, and it was in a bottom corner of the lamp boot. That bulb also checks out to be good. Still swimming....

Re: 2000 WJ / All brakes lights malfunctioning

Hello again Frango100,
For unknown reasons the brake lights are working again. Perhaps a combination of replacing the switch, pulling a bulb, pushing it back in, scratching my head, cursing, kicking dirt....something. Also, I did find that my upper brake lightbulb had corroded. I suppose that could have been a part of the original issue. Thanks for your help, and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Take care.

Its possible that the corrosion caused a partial short. At least its working again.
