2001 4.7l No Start Issues

Hoping someone can help. My husband and I just purchased a 2001 GC Limited 4.7l. The previous owner replaced the 01 engine with a used 05 4.7l engine complete with flywheel, wiring harness and PCM. He wasn't able to get it to start and didn't have time to work on it so sold it to us. Here is the issue....it will crank and act like its about to start but never will. We changed the crank and cam sensors with no luck and so replaced timing chains, gears, etc. with no luck! Still no start.....just cranks and cranks with backfiring sounds and thunking sounds. We are now scratching our heads and hoping someone can give us ideas on what to check and where to go from here.

Thank you so much!

Re: 2005 4.7l No Start Issues

I am fairly certain that the tone wheel on the crank and cams is different between the body styles... I could be wrong, Ive been wrong before, but it will never start if this is the case, it needs the proper cam and crank tone wheels which on the cam is just on the gear but on the crank it is a part of the crank.

Re: 2001 4.7l No Start Issues

But 2005JGC, when the PCM is from the 2005 WK as well, then there shouldn't be a problem with the tone wheels.
Could there be something wrong with the valve timing?

God call I read over that... Ultimately the 05 is CAN bus and the 01 is going to be like PCI bus, this means communication between the pcm and all the modules would be non existant... Hello problems!

2005 JGC thanks for the info but could I ask for you to explain the abbreviated terms so I can relay the info to my hubby? I'm not sure what a CAN bus and PCI bus are and what modules are you referring to? Thanks so very much in advance! Oh and what would be the solution....new PCM?

Re: 2001 4.7l No Start Issues

The WJ is using PCI bus communication, its just a name for the way the data communication between the several components is done.
The WK uses a CAN bus system, which has a different communication protocol then the PCI data bus and when im not wrong uses 2 data buses and the PCI only one.
2005JGC can probably tell it better, but im afraid that this engine will not work in the WJ. Or you should change the PCM AND the tone rings inside the engine. This last one is not impossible, because the tone ring on the crankshaft is bolted on, but it will be quite a job. Maybe you could change the engine for a WJ 4.7 for not too much.
