Hi:
I am having trouble getting my 2001 Jeep Cherokee hood open.
The interior pull is frozen and I can't seem to find a way to get to any parts to open the hood.
Any help would be aprreciated.
You can find a black cable inside your front grill! If your are able to pull it, it will release your hood. You will find this black cable on the right side of your front grill.
Let me take a picture for you tonight ! But Go to your jeep and looking for that black cable ! ! !
I am having a similar problem- my hood release cable actually snapped. The picture Hac_PTR posted looks like a GRAND Cherokee. Nevertheless, I looked all over the inside of my grill to see if I had a black cable. No luck, there's no cables at all. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the hood open on a 2001 regular (not Grand) Cherokee?
On 2000/2001 XJ's the cable is not where that picture shows. The parts are fastened to the under side of the hood.
A snapped cable is one of my worst fears because if that happens its a royal PITA to get the hood open again.
First of all, if you're not familiar on how the cable, bell crank and latches work, find another same year model and study how the whole thing works.
I would first try crawling under the Jeep with a flash light and locate the cable leading up to the latches.
If you're lucky yank on cable or manually open the latches.
Otherwise the head light assemblies need to be completely removed to gain access to the latches. Too complicated to describe here but there's a couple Utube videos on how to.
One thing i will say is that after 20 yrs. and 350K miles my hood has been opened a lot and i mean a lot.
I keep the cable and all other hood opening parts well lubed and i never yank on the open hood handle. Just gently pull until the latches open.
I'm in the process of figuring out a back up way to open the latches if the cable snaps.
Luuuube everything once you get it opened. That includes the safety catch. Mine was stuck in the released position when I purchased my '01 and clearly something had failed because the hood flipped back at some point. Quick squirt of some lube and it was working again. Like @moparado mentioned get those latches lubed and work some down the cable as well.
Yep. It's as I feared. I have crawled under there and there's no sign of any cable. So I started the complicated process of removing headlights, etc... ugh. This happened to me about 2 years ago, but at that time my Dad fixed it. I remember him taking out the headlight, though I didn't watch the process then, I wish I did as he's no longer with us. I will definitely be lubing up everything when I get it all back together, taking it apart is a PITA! Thanks for the replies!
As i said there is at least one or more Utube videos on how to do the headlight removal fix. Do a Utube search.
Where did the cable snap?
If it snapped near or at the release handle inside the cabin you could use a pair of channel locks or vise grips to yank on whats left of the cable.
If it snapped inside the engine compartment, yep you're in for a PITA fix.
Good luck and let us know how it turned out.
Originally it snapped right near the handle - when my Mom's big burly cousin tried pulling it, the handle broke off. Then we tried to pull the cable with pliers, the cable came out, so I think there may be multiple snaps and a seized/rusted/broken latch striker, ugh. I know I'm in for a pita fix. At this point I may just tow it to my brother's house cause he has power tools and experience fixing cars! I'll let you know if/when I get it fixed. May be a while as our house just sold and we have to move out, so at this point it's getting towed either way cause the battery is dead and I've no way to charge it. Gotta love Jeeps...
