2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Straight 6.

I attempt to start the car and it won't start. I can sit there turning it over and over and it won't start. I have not tried replacing the battery but I have a feeling that it could be something else. I am all ears for any diagnostics you all think I should try to identify why this is happening.

Thank you in advance :-)

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

So if it cranks normally, its obviously not a battery problem. First of all, did you check all the fuses?
If all ok, do you hear the fuel pump running for 3 seconds when switching ignition in run?

I did not check the fuses I will do that tonight. Also can I test the starter relay? I don't know how if you can tell me.

I do hear the fuel pump running for three seconds when I turn on the ignition and I hear it pump then it turns off and I prime it 3 times (just cause I am having issues) and then sometimes it will work....maybe a fuel filter?

I will check the fuses tonight for sure and report back...If that is not it and there are more tests I an do let me know :-)

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

If the engine cranks normally, then that is a sign that the starter relay is ok, so no other tests required on that.
I overlooked the fact that in the title you wrote that it starts sometimes. If it then runs, does it stay running? If it starts sometimes, then it also should not be a fuse. Fuel pressure would be the first to check. You could try a simple test, just to see if there is fuel under pressure at the fuel rail. Just press the schräder valve on the fuel rail after priming and see if fuel under pressure comes out. Use a rag to catch the fuel.
If the fuel comes out under considerable pressure, then most probably the problem is not fuel feed related.
If fuel is ok, then you need to confirm if there is spark. How about the plugs, did you check them already and are they not worn?
Eventhough it seems that you don´t have a check engine light on, i would still check for any fault code set. If you don´t have a scanner, you could do the keydance: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. The odometer will show "DONE" when no faults set, or a fault code(s).

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

OK so last night it started just fine went about 6 miles away. Then it would not start about 2 hours later. So I told my daughter to wait till I got their. I turned on the ignition and I did not hear the usual fuel pump noise pumping the fuel to the engine! So I was like AHHH the pump must be the issue! But then after I towed it (Towing ropes are so much fun lol) home this morning it started no problem. Also the fuel pump prime when you turn on the engine worked without any issues at all. I got out my code reader and I was about to check it when I saw the post about the key on off 3 times...so I just did that instead. Sure enough the code is P0441 says EVAP so I am going to check the gas cap to make sure that is on good and tight....any other ideas? I have not checked the spark plugs yet but wondering what other troubleshooting I should do on the P0441 code.

Also the check engine light came on :-(

So I don't have a crank sensor....do you know where I can get one? And what am I looking for with the sensor readings? If I see a certain reading it would indicate what ?

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

Maybe you dont have a crank sensor, but the jeep surely does. It well could be the crank sensor, but i prefer to rule out other possibilities first. Since you didnt hear the fuel pump, it could be the pump relay or fuel pump itself. Next time it doesnt want to start, press the schrader valve on the fuel rail and check if fuel under pressure comes out.
The crank sensor counts the revolutions of the engine and sends the info to the PCM. There is a writeup with pictures on here, i will give you the link at night, when im at home.

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

If it's not starting due to the crank sensor it will kick out a code. When the crank sensor went out on my Jeep it wouldn't start and threw a code right away. Came back 1 hour later and it started just fine (still showed the CEL light). From what I remember, it was a $125 sensor from Jeep so I would rule out all other possibilities before throwing expensive parts at it.

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

Did you ever figure out what this problem was? I find it very odd that when I had this problem all winter, nobody else on here seemed to, but now there are many. Weird that this started happening to more people, so I'm hoping to finally find an answer. By the way, now that it's getting warmer out, my jeep is "acting up" less to rarely with this issue. I have til about November I guess to figure it out before it gets cold again. :-)

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - No Start - Cranking normally - Sometimes will start

I am getting this code: P0441
Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

I tried the following so far:
- Tightened Fuel Cap really good
- Listened for fuel pump to prime right before starting while ignition is turned on
- Currently waiting for it to not start up again so I can test the schrader valve test that frango/Frank recommend

So far it did not start in the morning but started just fine later at around 4pm.....
It did not start at 10pm at night but started just fine the next day around 12pm....
Would not start the next morning at 6am but started just fine at 1pm.....
Drove to a house around 5pm started just fine, then went to start it to go home at 10pm and it would not start. All times it turns over just fine but will not catch and start....

Is there something about cold weather that would affect the fuel pump or EVAP system to keep it from turning on? The times I have noticed it will not start I did not hear the fuel pump working....so either the fuel pump is just slowly intermittently going out or it is something else
