2002 Laredo

Hi, I have an 2002 WJ laredo 4.0 select-trac.I can't seem to chase down a sound, likes birds chirping. It seems to get faster with speed increase, and seems to start at about 20mph. brakes are good. it sounds like its coming from middle of car. it has 106,000 miles. Just purchased it. this seems to be the only problems it has.

Re: 2002 Laredo

Did you check the T-case fluid level and take a sample to see how the fluid looks like?
Are you sure its from the middle of the jeep, because some stuck road debris between disc and dust shield can cause strange noises.

Re: 2002 Laredo

Thanks Frank, I figured I would check transfer case and diffs before snow hits. I will check rear dust shields today. I replaced front brakes already.

Re: 2002 Laredo

When I got my Jeep it made a similar sound. It wasn't until I had someone else drive it while I climbed around with my head out the window that I figured out it was actually coming from the front passenger side. It started around 15 mph and increased as speed increased. I couldn't figure it out and took it to a shop for diagnosis. They said it was a wheel bearing, but I've never heard a wheel bearing chirp before (usually more of a moan). But I changed the bearing because I had no other ideas and that was it.

I would suggest having someone drive while you stick your head out the windows on each side to see if it really is coming from the middle.

Re: 2002 Laredo

Thanks JeepMe right on the money with the wheel bearing. the thing wasn't failing, just making noise. Changed it anyway.
