2004 Overheating or is it?

Just purchased another Jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7. Lady stated it was overheating at least thats what mechanic had told her. Drove for two days no problems. Checked oil, radiator fluid levels, no signs of headgasket leak. Also did combustion gas check, turned slightly blue /green but only after several minutes. Anyone have another way to determine if I have a head gasket issue, I know there pretty common , but the jeep has only 130000 on it and seems to be well maintained. Thanks

Re: 2004 Overheating or is it?

Maybe its only overheating when standing still? As long as it doesn´t overheat now and coolant level stays ok and no coolant in the oil, i would not worry too much for now.

Did you verify operation of the cooling fan?

Re: 2004 Overheating or is it?

Thanks for getting back with me. Yes cooling fan working. Drove jeep for two days no overheating. Finally did compression check. Did with engine warm, got readings of 120 psi except for one that was about 5 lbs lower than all the others. thinking of pulling heads and replacing gaskets. any suggestions on replacing one or both sides. t
Thinking that possibly where leak might be on #7 cylinder, thought about checking torque on head bolts, but don't want to go to all the trouble and still need to replace gasket.

Re: 2004 Overheating or is it?

When im not wrong is 100 PSI the lower limit for any cylinder and is a max 15% difference acceptable between the highest and the lowest reading. Did you try the wet compression check, to see if eventually piston springs are the problem?

Nothing you posted gives any reason for changing head gaskets.

Re: 2004 Overheating or is it?

Thanks Guys, turned out to be a weak spring on valve spring #7 piston caused pressure drop in that cylinder. Had to have valves lapped though. Catch you guys on next problem.
