Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Well, I just got back from one of our junkyards. Wouldn't you know it, I got there too late for the good one. They had a Grand Limited which may have had the dimming rear view mirror on the drivers side, but it had already been removed. From looking at the wiring they left hanging, this unit would have been with dimming. Now I did find another 2002 Grand that had the drivers sdie nirror hanging from it's broken mount. This unit had the heated glass, but no dimming. I got it for $10.00. I felt that was a pretty good deal even if I have to give up the auto dimming feature. I'll use the instructions from this site to remove and replace the glass later on, after I warm up. We are at 4 deg with ice and snow. Cold but better than mud and flies and other bugs. It does sound like there is no fixing one of these units. You either sub or replace it per your pocket book!

Hi Dave, donīt know which instructions you are referring to, but here is a link to mirror replacement if you need it: http://www.wjjeeps.com/mirrors2.htm
Mopar has the replacement mirrors, but donīt think it will compensate to pay around 300 USD for just the auto dimming function. I donīt have it on mine and never felt the need to have it at least.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Just wanted to add my 2 cents that I had exactly the same problem on my 2004 Grand Cherokee Ltd. I actually found this site pricing replacement glass for it. I watched the dimmer coating "melt" to the bottom over the course of a couple months. It actually was a visibility problem for awhile until it all got to the bottom. Now that I have an idea how to remove the mirror...I may go junking for a part. It was nice, but I'm definitely not paying $200-300 for that function.

I did find another site where a Gentex rep offered to replace the mirror free on a Chrysler minivan if the guy would just send the bad glass back...but I can't seem to locate that one again.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

I just saw the last response to the Rear View Mirror Dimming Issue I posted. I still have the same mirror on my Jeep. It still looks the same as no interior materal has leaked out sense I took the picture. I did go to one of the closest junk yards about a month ago and did find a good rear view mirror glass. It has the heater feature, but no dimming feature. I paid them $10.00 and was able to follow the site instructions to remove the glass from the broken housing. I have been slow to replace the one on the Jeep, but I did note that when I turned on the dimming feature for the inside mirror, the outside mirroe did change some. I think that tells me that the feature does work. I just need a good glass piece and so I will go junkin' again sometime soon. As many Jeeps as there are around, I should be able to find a good one somewhere around here, Indianapolis, IN. I do still wonder what happened. Is it the cold weather/ Maybe someone slamming the door to hard causing a seperation inside? Maybe too much heat from the defrosting feature? Who knows?

Anyway, there is hope and maybe we will not have to pay $300.00 plus dollars. It appears to be a nice feature, but one I could live without if....

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Hi! We JUST had this same issue and we have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 69,000 miles on it. The driver's side mirror looked like it was filling up with a dark substance, covering about 1/2 of the mirror from bottom up. We took the layers of the mirror apart from the outside and a black oily substance came out. Almost like motor oil. We used paper towels and Dawn dishwashing liquid soap to cut the grease and thoroughly cleaned all layers of the glass and the mirror. We have NO IDEA what that liquid was--perhaps the electromagnetic gel breaks down over time? Not sure. We will see if more of this dark, oily, liquid continues to accumulate. Will keep you posted and see if it works. So far, we've saved $400 from a dealer replacement mirror.
