2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

First, I wanted to thank everyone for supporting a great site. This is like having the shop manuals for my Jeep, but even better with all the support from so many other memebers.
I just traded my first Jeep for a 2004 Grand Cherokee Overland. It has 111,000 miles, but looks and drives very nice. The drivers side rear view mirror has memory, heat and auto dimming. However, I think there may be something wrong with the auto dimming feature as the bottom half of the mirror has a "gold" reflective appearance while the top half is more silver like. The gold portion has a "jell" substance inside as it kinda moves around if i push on it, but it never fills the entire mirror surface. I think this is a problem and either needs to be fixed or replaced. This site has some info about these mirrors and even part numbers and possible cost.

Does anyone have an idea about fixing the one I have or am I just going to have to either go junking at the junk yard or to the parts counter at the Jeep dealer?

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Welcome to the garage.
Regarding your mirror problem, never saw anything like what you described. The jeep manual explains the mirror construction like this:
A thin layer of electrochromatic material between two pieces of conductive glass make up the face of the mirror.
It can be that the electrochromatic material is a kind of a gel, but when its all accumulated at the bottom part, for sure theres something wrong with the mirror. I think that the only option is to replace it. Junkyard would be the best option, don't know if you can easily find one.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Thanks Frank for the response. The dimming feature in the drivers side rear view mirror may be hard to find in a junk yard around here. The Jeep site that got me to "The Garage" is excellant with many topics, one of which concerns the rear view mirrors of 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees. I have already read the material and information about how to remove the glass from the assembly without having to take the whole mirror off the door. It does appear that the glass is available, of course at a cost, from the dealer. I have always wondered why the dealers (manufacturers) charge so much for their OEM parts. You'd think they would sell OEM parts at a reasonable price just so people could keep their "ride" in good shape. A "ride" in good shape is like a free advertisement running around and that I would think would help sell more of their cars. If people see that this stuff is falling apart and that the owners are not happy, new car buyers will look to something else. It's like this Jeep site. Why doesen't Chrysler support it? I guess at age 62 my ideas are just out dated.

Another thing was when I traded for this 2004 Overland at a dealer, they had paper mats on the floor to help keep down foot prints in the carpet. I figured that the mats were under the paper ones. Wrong! Not the drivers side mat. Now I have to try and find a mat or maybe after markets ones. The Garage can take me to parts stores for stuff like mats, etc. Why not factory OEM parts?

Thanks again for the response. Maybe I can return the favor next time.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

You should post up a picture of this mirror issue you have. That might help us.

Actually as far as Chrysler goes, I do think Jeep got involved directly with this site not too long ago to answer questions, etc. It's the first time I've ever seen anything like it. As for parts prices, it's all supply and demand. They've got the supply and we've got no choice most of the time.

On to mats. I have Weathertech mats in mine. They are awesome winter mats. Best I've ever had in any vehicle. As for carpet mat replacements, Lloyd mats has a solid product and you can get it customized with the Overland logo too I believe.

This should be the picture of my drivers side mirror showing the bottom half with perhaps the dimming effects in gold while the top portion is still silver.

Wow! I can honestly say I've never seen anything like that in my life! It almost looks like tint film! Hopefully someone on here can chime in.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Looks like the lower part of the mirror is constantly in dim. Does anything changes when you put the interior rearview mirror auto dim in OFF?

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

I had this happen to me a few years back. After pricing an auto dim I said the hell with that took the mirror apart removed the outer clear glass wiped off the jelly unplugged the auto dim plug in the housing and presto good as new. There is still a regular heated mirror under the clear glass and jelly.I remember a write up on this years ago I just cant remember where. Maybe NAGCA. Its not very hard though. Maybe Frango can help with the removal of the innards from the housing. Hope this helps.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

What happens to these is the seal fails and moisture and crud gets into the gel so there isn't much hope for any kind of repair.

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

The answer to Frank, there is no change when i turn on or off the dimming feature under the rear view mirror inside. The inside mirror does dim, so I assume the circuit is working and maybe the signal is being sent to the outside mirror, but it's just not doing anything. The gold section does help with glare and so I think the bottom half is what I should get all over if the feature was working correctly.
Regardless of what I may do, buy another glass section if available or do the reduction and eliminate the dimming feature, I appreciate all the ideas. It's the conversation like this that I miss when i was working. Retirement is great, but like so many others have said, we miss the conversations.
I'll price the part and then go to a couple of our local junk yards and see if i might be able to find a good one. I used to enjoy junkin'. It's still kinda fun looking around. It would be nice if it were a little warmer though. We just got hammered with ice. Thats why my ride looks rather dirty right now.

Thanks Again to all.
Dave Huff

Re: 2004 Rear View Mirror auto dimming issue

Hi dave, when you are going to look around on the junkyard, you can identify this auto dim mirror by the tiny letters "GNTX" etched along the bottom edge of the mirror.
