4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee High Coolant Temperature

Normally my 2000 GC temp is around 90 degC but today it hit approx 108 which i have never seen before. Stopped the car and checked coolant level which was fine. After a while the temp dropped to around 100. Do these vehicles have thermostat issues and if so is the thermostat easy to change?

Re: 4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee High Coolant Temperature

Any vehicle can have an issue with the thermostat, the 4.7 is not different. You did check the coolant in the radiator, or only in the overflow reservoir? If there is a leak, the overflow reservoir can stay full, while the level in the radiator goes down. Check the level on a cold engine, it should be right under the cap.
If necessary, the thermostat can be changed easily. It sits just behind the aluminum housing where the lower hose connects to the engine. Two bolts and it comes loose, but the whole cooling system need to be drained.
