99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

Hi everyone, I have not posted before but I have read on the forum. Me and my family have a 99 WJ and the lights won't turn off after shutting the door unless the key is turned while in the ignition or something. My father found out how to get them to cut off but it was only temporary, but currently the switch near the steering wheel is set to off for the interior lights. Sometimes when it's set to off, the lights will still turn on for bit, then turn off. Does anyone know how to fix these issues?

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

Right off the top of my head, I would first check all the doors, tailgate, and rear glass to make sure everything is closing firmly. If your Jeep has an EVIC (computer mounted between the sun visors up on the headliner) it should tell you if it's sensing an open door. The door itself might be shut tight, but the sensor telling the computer it's shut might be bad.

It could also be your multifunction switch (the stalk itself where the switch for interior lights is located).

If you've replaced bulbs inside your Jeep with LED's, that could also be the problem. You'll need a resistor installed in-line to go back to normal operation

I'm no expert on electrical, but that's were I'd start.

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

Welcome to the garage.
The interior lights are switched via the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM gets various inputs from door ajar switches and the left multi function switch. If the multi function switch is in off, the interior lights should not come on anymore, independent on any door position. So it seems to be a problem with the multi function switch or wiring.

Thanks for the replies. I think its something with the wiring going into the drivers door or something. The windows wouldn't let down until the wiring was moved. I came back and seen the drivers seat was let all the way back. No one did it. Weird.

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

A lot of folks have wires break inside the rubber boot that connects the door to the body. From all the flexing of opening and closing the door over the years, some of the wires can weaken and break. You may not be able to tell just by looking, as the insulation could still be ok, but the wire inside is broken. More often than not though, it's pretty obvious once that boot is out of the way.

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

The windows not going down together with the interior lights not going off, is almost for sure a broken black ground wire in the drivers door boot. Its not that easy to move the boot away and have a good look. As TJXJWJ said, only looking is not enough, as the insulation could still be intact and mislead you. If you donīt see a broken wire, you really have to move them a bit with a finger and feel for weak points, which could indicate the breakage. The best repair ofcourse is to replace the complete wire for a more flexible one, but with the same thickness. I had this problem almost 2 years ago and did a "temporary" repair and just soldered them together and isolated with tape, but this temp repair became a final one, because i never have time (or whichever other excuse i can find when time is available)

Well now we have to do the temp fix or buy another wire. My father was trying to do something and this happened.
EDIT: In case no one sees the picture. The ground wire snapped while he was looking at it or whatever. Say if we wanted to get more wire, as in a permanent fix, who would sell it? Autoparts store?

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

Probably a good auto parts store will have it, or a store where they sell all kind of wires. Be sure to get the same gauge (thickness), otherwise you could run into other problems (overheated wire).

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

I am having the same problem with the interior lights and windows. Also my door locks won't work with the remote and only the driver's side mirror works.

Re: 99 WJ - Interior Lights Won't Shut Off

So have a look at the wiring in the drivers door boot, you will probably find the black wire broken.
