Aftermarket Remote Starter Issues

My 2001 Grand Cherokee has an AstroStart 903U remote starter on it. I've used it for years with no issues, up until a couple weeks ago when my girlfriend lost one of the sets of keys. I went to the dealer, and they were able to get me a replacement factory key and key fob.

Since then, the remote starter has not worked correctly. The engine will start up just fine, but it shows a light on the dash that looks like a key inside of a circle with a line going through it. The engine then promptly shuts off.

I'm assuming that when the dealer programmed my new key and fob, it messed something up with the remote starter's programming. I asked the dealer about it the next time I was there, but they refused to even look into it since it was an aftermarket remote starter.

Does anyone know how I would go about getting it re-programmed in the vehicle's computer? I found a section in the RS's manual that explains how to add new key fobs, but I don't think that is the issue.

Re: Aftermarket Remote Starter Issues

The light is from the SKIS (sentry key imobilizer system). When there is no valid key in the lock, then the engine starts, but shuts down in 3 seconds. Not familiar with remote start systems, but one way or the other, there must be a key close to the SKIS receiver (which is a round antenna ring which sits around the ignition barrel). When using your key, it also doesn´t stay running? Then the stealer most probably did something to the SKIS receiver.

The vehicle starts up and runs just fine when using the key. When using the remote starter, it starts, runs for 3 seconds, stops, and then starts again (repeating this process), just as you said.

Re: Aftermarket Remote Starter Issues

So or there is a module which acts in place of the transponder key when using remote start, or they just put a spare key close to the antenna. Did you check if there is any loose wire under the steering wheel area? Seems that a wire from the remote start goes to the OBDII port as well.

Yes need a module that mimicks the key. Talk to local car audio shop
