Post Air Conditioning Does Not Work

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 6 CYL. For the past 2 or 3 years my Air Conditioning has not worked. When I turn it on it runs and that's with the fan, I have had it charged up and the ducts cleaned out and even had a Thermometer put in the vent to see how cold the air was blowing and it was around 48 degrees coming out of the vent. I can run it for 10 to 15 minutes and it still does not cool the car down.

Just the other week I was on the road and ran it for a half hour and still it was hot in the car.

At this point I do not know what the problems is and my wife is getting very mad.

Can someone please help us out here here and tell us what the problem is?

The Jeep only has 107,000 miles on it and it is not even brook in yet.

I am not going through another Summer without it.

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

You may be dealing with an obstruction or like an expansion valve concern, I actually just replaced one in a limited a week or 2 ago because it was blowing luke warm out the passanger vents and coldish out the driver vents... when the air across the evaperator isnt being divided like the dual zone i am sure it would make everything luke warm.

too much oil in the system can cause ineffiency, a failing compressor can, its hard to say without seeing pressures whats going on.

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

no not engine oil. he is talking about oil in the compressor. you cant check the levels yourself. although you like;ly have other problems. 48 degree air should cool your vehicle eventually if its 100 outside its just going to take a really long time if you arent able to park in a garage or in the shade then the interior of the vehicle gets way past whatever the outside temp is it can reach 160 degrees inside a closed car. and thats not just the air temp its everything in the car, seats, carpets dashboard etc. so youre not only trying to cool the air but everything around you as well 10 or 15 minutes isnt long enough to even begin cooling it all down. i would suggest you just drive with the a/c on and windows down for maybe 5 or 10 minutes before you close everything up. rememberthis is a 14 yr old vehicle and insulation now is way better in todays cars as are the air con systems. just something to think about

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

Is there enough airflow coming from the air outlets? The 48 F you get ( a little less then 9 C, where 7 C would be normal) is not too bad to cool down the interior.

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

Having the same issue, air vents are not blocked, and about the same temperature coming out based on the last test the mechanic did..... So hopefully John's fix will fix mine too....

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

48 is ok if it's 100 out but it should be 36ish. Sounds like an orfice tube or expansion valve problem. Let a pro check it out. Ac stuff is not for amatures as it can be dangerous to work on.

Re: Air Conditioning Does Not Work

40 degrees below ambiant is acceptable mid 30s on a 13 yr old vehicle in the warmest part of the day is hopeful to say the least
