Bad door sensor?

Greetings, I just registered on here and I really appreciate having a place to discuss the greatest SUV ever made.Ok I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 V-8 . I live in SC and we have gotten a ton of rain this past week and this past Friday 10-2, I was leaving work, I started the engine and when I closed my door my message center indicated my driver's door was still open and my interior dome lights stayed on.I opened and closed the door numerous times and the message never went away and of course as you all probably know once the door is open the power windows, the side mirrors and the seat memory do not work. When I got home I pulled the negative cable off the battery and reset the system. After that the door is basically dead.I checked the fuses and all is fine. When I operate my remote all my doors lock except the driver door.I know that other vehicles I have owned have that door jamb plug or switch that is pushed in when the door closes but this is my first WJ body Jeep.I went to my local auto parts retailer and of course that guy was about useless. So I figured that if I posted this on here that I would get the correct information.I plan on doing many upgrades to my WJ Cherokee and I look forward to finding a solution to my issue and getting good advice from knowledgeable, honest fellow Cherokee owners,I want to say in advance thanks for taking the time to read my post and guide me in the right direction.I can usually figure mechanical issues out but as I said this is my first WJ Cherokee. Thanks again

Re: Bad door sensor?

As far as I know your power windows and power mirror should still work even with the door open. I would have to test this on my Jeep once I get it back tomorrow from the Dealership PCM flashing. This sounds like a bad Driver's Door Module or you lost power because of a broken wire. For future reference for yourself and others; the door ajar sensor is built into the latch assembly itself. Could be the big black ground wire in the door jamb or it could be another wire that broke (or multiple). If you search Jeep WJ on youtube there are a few videos:

The video below you don't have to take off panel to check the boot. It seems someone repaired that door before? There's no white connector like in my WJ Laredo, hmm.

It gives you a general idea of what you're looking for. There's other videos that give you a better idea of how to pull the boot back. Quick tip if you pull the boot back. You can squeeze both sides of that white connector and pull it out to make it easier for you to get the boot back on.

Here's another:

Re: Bad door sensor?

Cool thanks.I think its a bad drivers door module because I have looked around inside the door and around the master window control switch and all the wires look good.I appreciate the links to those videos too.Have a good day and thanks again.

Re: Bad door sensor?

Windows should still work with the door open. Even if all the wires in the door boot look fine from the outside, the wire might be broken internally. For that reason you will need to bend the wires a bit, to be sure there is no internal break (with the isolation still intact).

Re: Bad door sensor?

You know after Laredo sent those links to those YouTube videos and after you (Frango) suggested that its a wiring issue I am pretty sure its that wire in the door boot.It seems to be a quite common issue. Thanks to both of you for your recommendations.I have some other issues that need addressed too and I will be posting those too. Thanks again.

Re: Bad door sensor?

Well I had a few free hours this am before I had to go to work and.so I decided to check the door where the wiring harness plugs into the door and just like in the video I had a broken wire. The same black wire as in the video.I pretty much did what the guy in the video did and everything is in good working order again.Im glad too because its the first day that we have not had rain here in SC.I was able to open my windows and sunroof and enjoy the nice weather. Thanks to you all for your suggestions.I truly appreciate it.

Re: Bad door sensor?

You're welcome. I found this community through PCI BUS issue searching. And thanks to Frango100 I was able to narrow it down over time to what the issue was. If you're mechanically inclined... the one thing I can suggest is to watch a lot of Electrical Automotive youtube videos and learn how to do voltage drops, read a wiring diagram etc. It's very useful.

Also, on e-bay there's plenty of people selling the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Factory Service Manual PDF for a low amount of money. If you plan on keeping this Jeep forever; it's worth every penny. I can send you a link in a private message as I'm not sure links to that kind of stuff is allowed here. It's the one I bought and it even has a parts manual for 1999-2004 jeeps.

Re: Bad door sensor?

Oh yeah I already fixed it and everything is working as it should.I will indeed use that link.I do plan on keeping the 04 for awhile. It has 130,000 miles on it and I take care of my vehicles. Thanks again for the sugestions and links,I am also looking into a 1979 Cherokee Chief as a project. It has that monster 360 V-8 with Quadra-Trac.My previous 1976 Cherokee Chief got 8 mpg but it would pull a house down. I will be sure to seek out feedback and advice whenever I plan on doing upgrades or have any issues at all. Thanks again
