Bad rear end noise!

I need some advice. I have a 2001 limited WJ with selec a trac. Recently I began hearing a loud crack or pop sound coming from the rear end when I first start off the line in forward or reverse under heavy torque or a fast throttle. The jeep rides fine no road noise or whining from rear end just this load crack when first pulling away under load. After that no more noise. I can duplicate it if I brake torque. It just pops once or twice. Very load almost like gears skipping. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated! I just had my rear seals done less then a year ago and they didn't say anything looked bad in the rear end.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: Bad rear end noise!

Have you gotten under there and really looked it over? That could be a broken shock mount/bolt, could be a broken spring, or a bad upper ball joint for the A-arm. When you punch it and the rear end squats, it would load the suspension. Hopefully, it's just a suspension noise. That would be a lot easier and cheaper of a fix than a gear problem!

Re: Bad rear end noise!

You could have some play in the rear propeller shaft U-joints. Also take a small oil sample from the aft diff after driving to look for metal shavings or glinsters in the oil, which could show a problem inside the diff.

Re: Bad rear end noise!

I think I will do that today when I get home. Doesn't seem like the typical u joint noise. Takes more torque at the wheels to make the noise.

Got the same noise only on right rear only. I will get (back up) under and look again. Sounds suspension-related only. Will let you know what I find out on mine...

Re: Bad rear end noise!

Have you checked the transfer case? Mine makes a noise kind of like you described on heavy acceleration and slippery surfaces, and its has perplexed me. My best guess so far is that it starts to happen when the tcase fluid starts getting low (It has a slight leak, haven't really taken the time to look at it aside from topping off the fluid every few months).

Re: Bad rear end noise!

When the noise comes from the T-case, it could be the chain which has too much play. Only a new chain would solve this. Ofcourse some other things inside the T-case can start making noise. But be aware that noises that seem to come from one place, can in fact have its origin at an other end. This is due to the drive train which can transmit the noise/vibration via the propeller shafts.
Does your jeep have Quadra-trac or Quadra-drive Samuel2003? In that case you have a good change that your problem is the T-case chain. Because on slippery surfaces when rear wheel slip occurs, the front wheels will be connected via the progressive coupling inside the T-case and if the chain has become too large, it could start skipping the teeth, making the noise. One of the members here had experienced this before.

Re: Bad rear end noise!

I had an identical problem on a pickup truck. My rear shock was cracked and peeled on its mount (the shock itself). Hard to explain without a picture, but the end of the shock where the bolt goes through, that was supposed to look like this --> O actually looked like this--> C

Re: Bad rear end noise!

Frango100, I do have Quadra-Trac II on it. I will will look into the chain on it once it starts to get warmer out. I have to do the rear axle seals anyway, so I will probably look into it when I do those. Thanks for the good information, you seem to know quite a bit about these tcases.

Re: Bad rear end noise!

Not really that i know a lot about it, but with all the experiences of the other members, we learn a lot and can share it with others. That is the very nice thing of being a member of the garage.
I do try to dig into the function and most common faults of the components in our Jeeps with the help of my Jeep service manual and the good old (oh well, not that old) google search engine.
Regarding the chain in the T-case, you will not be able to see it unless you split the T-case. One of the members here did change his chain several months ago, so maybe he can give you some advise. Just try to find it using the Search button.
Just did the search function myself, just put in the search "T-case chain" and then go to the Thread " Quadra Trac II question" from Tdixon1000. Didnīt see him lately in the garage, so donīt know if you still will be able to reach him.
