Blend doors and intermitent heat

I am looking for feedback on climate control probelm on my 02 GC Ltd with dual zone temp conrol. It's been mighty cold in the Jeep. Well, sometimes it's cold, other times the heat comes out just fine. I ran the disgnostic process and got the following codes: 15, 47, and 52.

Based on the info I have found, 15 and 47 indicate a left door issue and 52 recirculation door problem. I bought new blend doors which I am planning on installing tomorrow using the glove box method. I think that will restore consistent heat and take care of codes 15 and 47.
While I am in there I will probably lock the recirculation door in open position, so I assume code 52 will still be there.

The confusing part is that sometimes I get no heat, other times all seems fine. Will the blend doors resolve it or should I do some more digging? Any feedback would be great.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

The blend doors are the most likely problem. In any event fix them first and see where you're at.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

When the heat works sometimes and sometimes not, it seems that the doors are still working. It could be a blend door actuator problem as well. The faults 15 and 47 also point to that direction, "left temp door was not responding". When the doors are the problem, it usually gives a "travel range too large" message.
Just remove the glove box and you will see the left blend door actuator. Move the left temp select knob from cold to hot to see if the actuator moves. Probably it doesn´t. Check the electrical connections to the actuator.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

^very good point. Frango actually helped me quite bit with my 02 grand and it had the same issues as yours. In my case, it wasnt the actuator, its broken blend doors.

I got a tad lucky, depending if youre a glass half full or half empty guy, and am manually able to open the doors with the actuator removed by turning the doors by hand. I have to open the glove box whenever I require heat, and I'm not always able to catch the doors so they open again on the first few of turns anymore, sometimes it takes forever. It's starting to become a bit of a pain but I think I'll be able to get through the winter.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

The long and short of it is that both actuators actuate and the blend doors go all the way up and down when the temp controls are activated. The passenger one may be a little lazy, but it does what it is supposed to do. The blend doors actually look like are not all that old so they may have been replaced not too long ago by the previous owner.
Would the recirc door cause no heat? That looks stuck.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

I dont know about WJs but this is a major problem with ZJs, the blend door actuator breaks but i'm confused as to why you would get no heat at all sometimes, it should still blow warm air somewhere. Mine always seem to blow to the windshield vents and nowhere else.(3 out of my 5 ZJs have this problem) another thing is the fan will continue running with the switch and ignition off leaving me with a drained battery over night. my understanding is a repair requires removing half the dash to repair either problem, so I have not fixed any of them...shivering keeps me warm I will be checking this in the spring...when I strip down my parts truck... there is a kit I have seen where you cut open the box and replace a broken actuator shaft ( usualy the problem)
but I can't remember where I saw the post on another forum.

that should only control weather cold air comes from outside or inside the cabin.
a good way to check the actuator is to move the circulation direction selector, with the fan on low the doors make a flopping sound as they change position.
I was about to put these in my previous post but here is good;
My Haynes manual states under heater core removal that you must remove the dash to get the control/blend box out.(major pain in the pooper)
I believe this is the article I saw before regarding repair of doors...is this the repair kit you bought?

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

Hi Bob, regarding your ZJ problem, is that system not controlled by vacuum actuators? Air to the windshield is normally the default setting when no vacuum is present. Most of the time a shaved through or loose vacuum line under the hood is the cause.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

Hi FredoinSF, as Bob said, the recirculation door doesn´t have any influence on heating or not heating. Its or the blend doors, the heater core or the control of the blend doors. Did you test the doors with engine running, to feel if hot air was coming out? When the problem is there again, check the heater hoses in the engine bay close to the firewall to feel if they are hot(and no kinks in them). A restricted or obstructed heater liquid flow would give the same problem, not explaining however why it happens randomly. To me it looks more as an electrical problem due to the intermittent caracter.

Re: Blend doors and intermitent heat

that's a good possibility frank, I opened the haynes and saw the first paragraph on removal and thought it really doesn't get that cold here, and the jeep still warms up windshield first, just my feet stay cold...any excuse I could think of not to take the dash apart i think the doors themselves are controled by an elec. motor there is a vac actuator in there but I just decided to compromize and leave it...long as it gets me A to B...it's a beautiful thing...however if it gets to miserable outside there's always the niner or the Hemi so I have other options

yes there is a problem with that control module as well I have an intermitant problem with the fan staying on even with the ign. off and the control switch off as well on the larados and ltd.s
(different control modules) I think its a poor connection due to dirt/dust. It seemed to correct itself by changing the battery on 1 jeep...go figgure ??? a reminder I'm talking ZJs... after I tear my parts truck down I will better understand how they go together and I won't be so timid about tearing down the good jeeps. mechanical repairs are not a problem for me, But electrical stuff scares the bejezzes out of me, I usually get some one else to deal with that.
