brake light issues

Ok so I have been having issues with my tail lights and i can't seem to track down an answer so i wanted to see if anyone has experienced this. a couple weeks ago i noticed my tail light was out ok no big deal i popped in a new bulb...still didn't work but I finally did notice that it worked when i pressed the brake pedal. Now today I just found out that neither tail light lights up when i press the brake but my 3rd light still lights up. I've been reading that tail/brake light issues are pretty common but i can't seem to find the same symptoms i've been having. Anyone have any ideas? I thought maybe the brake switch that i read about somewhere might be the issue but i figured if that was bad then none of the brake lights would work. Soooo confused

Re: brake light issues

Did you try cleaning the connectors in the sockets of the tail lights?

If that doesn't work I would suggest maybe ordering replacement sockets (P/N 4676589)

if all else fails replacement tail lights. You can get OEM replacements for around $105 - $117 per unit depending on your year model.

(Do note that the tail lights sold on Just For Jeeps don't come with sockets or bulbs so maybe Ebay might be your best bet for that)

Re: brake light issues

Yea I read about that but haven't tried it yet i was hoping that would do the trick. was more concerned it would be that brake switch i read about for another model and the word switch scared me because some switch problems can get pricey and i haven't read much on this one lol. I'll give cleaning the connectors a shot hopefully it's just that or a couple of new sockets thanks for the tips

Re: brake light issues

The switch is ok, otherwise you would not have the 3rd brake light working. Most of the time the small tabs on the sockets are the problem. Just bend them out a little bit and try again.

Re: brake light issues

Well I messed around with them a little and eventually got both tail lights to work and 2 out of 3 brake lights one being the 3rd brake light so it's good enough for now.

How about back up lights? I noticed my back up lights were not working occasionally before but now they don't work at all? I tried the connection cleaning method on these too but with no success. I know some electrical problems on volkswagens which I've owned most of my life could be traced to the neutral safety switch on an automatic transmission, could this be the same thing?

Re: brake light issues

Yes it could. Unfortunately the backup switch is inside the tranny and is part of the transmission solenoid pack.
If you have a multimeter, i would start measuring at the tail light to be sure that the voltage is not available, because it also could be a problem of the socket.
