Re: cant find the engine number 4.7L Grand

Hi dshanni
Did you find your engine number? I am in the same position cannot get registration until I find it. I removed the oil filler pipe and found 4.7 18/12/02 stamped in dots but that's it. Have looked all around oil filter and engine mounts from above and below but nothing. Any help would be much appreciated .

Re: cant find the engine number 4.7L Grand

Thanks all. I Saturday morning I spent another hour underneath with a mirror and a torch and with no success. In frustration I contacted Chadstone Jeep (local dealer) they said if I give them the vin number they can tell me exactly where it is stamped! Gave them the vin a couple of minutes later they said they can give me everything about the car EXCEPT where the vin is!!!!! said they would call me back either today or Tuesday morning.....still waiting.
It's booked in for a roadworthy tomorrow will see if the local garage can find it if not I'm taking it to jeep dealership this week. VicRoads permit runs out Friday was hoping for rego by then.

Hey Bruce

I just called Poly 4x4 down on Huntingdale ( Jeep 'resource' near you) and he advised that the Ser# is 'etched' into the block between the engine mount and the timing case cover (driver side). He called it the 'dot matrix' style font and is applied to the block exterior surface and it's not on a cast or machined surface. He suggested carefully cleaning the block with spirits in that area and promised you'd find it.
Bonne chance!

WOO HOO THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Found it!!
Very hard to see but can just make out some numbers, after cleaning around it the cleaner the block is the harder it is to read but at least something is there. I'll just have to work on it and try and make it readable.
Jeep phoned today and said I will find it on the block near where the dip stick enters the block which is way down between the fire wall and the back of the engine.....happy to report nothing there.
Passed the roadworthy today and when I pressed the mechanic he said VicRoads wont want to see it. But I'm betting they will.
Will book it in hopefully next week, thanks again to SoMPLSBoy
stay tuned
Bruce

can you get a very good pic of it? if so that is the best way to figure out the numbers/letters...sometimes all that is needed is just a good zoom in on the computer to read it but sometimes you need to adjust contrast/darkness/brightness/midtones and the characters will reveal themselves...used this trick several times on non-car stuff...hope you get your number

Re: cant find the engine number 4.7L Grand

Great news Bruce!
Forgot to add that the dot matrix numbers you'll see will line up with the last eight (8) digits of your VIN.
Get to know the gang at Jeep Poly 4x4. Real enthusiasts and they speak "Jeep" better than anybody else.
Good luck with the registration process and I sure hope the official grabs a torch and takes a look. If they're not interested, you just gotta tell them this 'story' of your quest to comply with the rules!

Re: cant find the engine number 4.7L Grand

Thanks for all your help. I have been to 4x4 for a couple of things mainly the suspension bushes and arms. Found them very helpful and will definately use them again. Rang VicRoads today and have booked my car in, Monday 2.30 is d day. I asked him if they had a pit or how do they see the number from underneath he didn't know either but did say he's booked in hundreds of cars and hasn't heard of any problems.
Must admit I'm a bit nervous but excited getting out on the open road.
