Which line? Towards the bottom of my dipstick, there are two holes, one saying "ADD" and one saying "SAFE". But no line. On the back of my dipstick, there is a line, but its pretty far up the stick...not trying to make this more complicated than it should be, just don't wanna destroy my engine.

It's funny actually, the tapping noise at startup reminded me of the inherent diesel noise. Guess its the oil! But really...

Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

Best is to keep the oil level in between ADD and SAFE marks. This dipstick doesn´t have lines, but holes. It should in fact not go over the SAFE mark, oil foaming and consequently oil pressure loss could be the result. You normally only have to fill oil when the level goes down the ADD mark. For an acurate reading, you have to run the engine for 5 minutes or so and then let it rest for 10 minutes and then take the reading.

Dangit. How do I remove oil then? Do I have to go back under my car and remove it through the drain valve? I guess that's the only way...

I guess I should have said between the lines (holes) but the safe zone is between the holes. You could loosen the filter but that's going to be messy. Best way is to loosen the drain plug but not remove it. How many quarts of oil did you put in? According to what I see it takes 6 quarts so if you used the correct oil filter and put in 6 quarts of oil it shouldn't be over filled...if it is you need to figure out what is displacing the oil causing it to be over filled. One question you did check the level after running it so the oil could get distributed through the engine right?

Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

Yep, I checked after I ran the engine for a bit and the oil was a bit over the save hole. So, if the oil is between the two holes, it should not be filling the "SAFE" hole, correct?

Reason I wasn't able to put exactly 6 quarts in was the oil in the rotella containers was not filled to the quart lines. So I couldn't exactly measure out 6 quarts...

The oil filter I used...its a royal purple, and I think it might be a bit bigger than the stock.

So I actually drove my car for a bit yesterday. Let it sit overnight, in ~40 degree temperature, and here's the oil level now:

The oil line is probably half a cm over the safe hole...too much.

After running the engine for 5 minutes and letting it sit for 10, the oil line is just at, if not a tiny bit above, the safe hole:

So I got the oil level down to in between safe and add, but the engine is still tapping at cold. Want a sound clip?

Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

I just see oil over the whole dipstick. Did you clean it first before measuring?

It also appears there is a little bit of oil burning in the gas...a hint of smoke coming out the tailpipe.

Yes. My dipstick is pretty warped so it comes in contact with the walls of...whatever the dipstick hole is called. You have to look at that line, it's sort of hard to see, but if you look closely you can see where the oil stops.

Just drove 5 miles. Reset the trip comp. averaged this!

That's up a good 1.5 mpg from enforce the oil change...good.

My car also drove much...smoother? Throttle felt smoother, hard to describe. When I got home, the tapping was gone.
