Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

Did you see from which part of the radiator the steam came from? Sometimes there is water in the cooling holes, which evaporates due to the heat of the coolant. Is coolant level low? Could be a leak of the radiator ( many times a leak starts at the seam between the aluminum core and plastic side tanks). But could also be a problem of a leaking radiator cap.

It was basically just coming out of the whole radiator...not sure that it was coming out of a specific area. I'll look for any obvious leaks under the hood, but to be honest I'm not really sure what I should be looking for.

First look if the coolant level in the expansion reservoir is at normal level, or if its low, indicating a real leak.
When you start a cold engine, the coolant will warm up and expand, causing a higher pressure in the cooling system. An eventual leak will appear then. If there is just water on the radiator cooling fins, it can start evaporating when the radiator becomes hot, causing some steam.
Take care if there is a small leak, that the coolant level doesn´t go down too far, because that could cause the engine to overheat.

Interrresting...

Checked coolant after 9 miles of driving today and it was quite a bit over full. Could this have anything to do with my steaming problem?

While I'm at it, any other fluids that I should flush and replace? Planning a run of bg44k soon anyways.

Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

The level is normal. The coolant expands as the engine heats up. First an overpressure of about 18 PSI is buildup in the cooling system by a pressure relief valve in the radiator cap. After the 18 PSI is reached, the relief valve opens and the coolant will flow towards the expansion reservoir and the level goes up. The pressure increase in the cooling system will increase the boiling point of the coolant.
So if the coolant level doesn´t change, i won´t bother too much about the steam, its probably just water which is evaporating due to the heat of the radiator.
Regarding the fluids change, do you know the service history of the jeep?

Unfortunately, no, I don't know the service record. My dad bought the car for me-there is one record I have. In August 2012 there was a pretty big maintenence done-new brakes(rotors and pads), new oil filter, new tps, new hood strut, and new tie rod ends.

Re: Can't get my wj outta 4lo?

So then it all depends on how long you pretend to keep it. If you want to keep it for a while, best is to change all fluids: differential fluid, T-case fluid, transmission fluid and filters. Brake fluid should be changed once in the 2 years. This is because it is hygroscopic, ie it attracts water from the air. These water particles will start boiling at 100 °C and become vapor, which makes the brakes feel spongy or in worst case completely loose braking force. The 2 year interval is a safe service interval.
The service manual doesn´t mention anything about changing the power steering fluid, but i would change it once. Could extend the life of the pump and seals.
Also coolant needs to be changed once in a while. Eventhough the coolants nowadays are longlife and seem to have a service life of 5 years, i wouldn´t recommend to wait that long. There are many horror stories about electrolysis inside the cooling system, where aluminum is braking down and causing leaks (especially on radiator and heater core).
