Chronic TPS issues??

My 2004/4.7 had to have its TPS replaced at 49K miles. Yesterday, my wife's 2004/4.7 had to have its TPS replaced at 155K miles (we got it at 135k miles, so I don't know the history).

Is periodic replacement of the 4.7's TPS normal? Should I carry a spare in the vehicle with me????? (They are easy enough to replace, but the dealer in Oklahoma....we were on a cross-country trip at the time....charged me $312 for a job I can do myself with the right Torx tool and a new, $30 part.)

Anyone who has put lots of miles on their WJ have regular issues with the TPS?

It is VERY common on the 4.7l engine. It rarely fails in any way other than a wondering idle maybe some harsh shifting from the trans. Its not important enough of a part (something that will leave you stranded) so ultimately its not really worth carrying a spair.

Actually, its failure was first brought to my attention by the torque converter locking and unlocking as we drove at 75mph. After about 10 miles of this, the transmission started downshifting and upshifting, downshifting and upshifting, while traveling at a steady 75mph. Also, the air conditioning compressor would cycle on and off every one to two seconds (noticeable while idling). Both my Jeeps exhibited these same issues, caused by the failure of the TPS. Granted my own GC had the wandering idle as well, but the wife's did not.
None of this was good for the components, so I replaced it as soon as I got to the next Jeep dealer.
Thanks for the thoughts, I'll keep a new TPS in with the spare tire.

For the price of it, and if you do a lot of cross country driving I guess it might be worth it to keep a spare in the jeep along with the right torx driver. Mine lasted about 125k miles and then new one has been fine for another 20k so far so while they are common to fail, they don't really fail that often, but like I said if you want cheap insurance if you drive a lot where you won't always have parts access it wont hurt anything to carry an extra.
