Click or slight clank in rear end 04 GC LE 8 cyl (not HO)

When turning, I sometimes heat a click noise or clanky type sound (light metallic sound) that seems to come from around the rear diff. Does not seem to impact performance or anything, but annoys me. ANy ideas?

This only happens when turning? I would have a look at the rear axle upper control arm. Play at the center ball joint can give some noises.

I would start by checking fluid levels of the rear differential and the transfer case. After that, I would check CV and U joints and rear upper ball joint.

Frank, you are right. The noise is not exclusive to turning. It does happen when I moving straight as well. I am going to check out the center bj as soon as I can. What should I expect to pay if I have someone do it for me (I don't have a lift)?

You donīt need a lift for the center balljoint, but it is quite a pain in the XXX to get to it. It is mounted with 4 bolts to the differential housing and 1 nut on top.
No idea on prices, but i would say that using a lift, it would take an hour to do the job.

Re: Click or slight clank in rear end 04 GC LE 8 cyl (not HO)

This seems to be a problem im having [ look for rear suspension problems on this site ] im getting the cv joints checked as I had a noise when turning left , which only started a few days ago but has since gone, plus the usual noise coming from the rear , it seems most WJ owners get this mystery noise despite everything under the Jeep being inplace and tight .
