Clicking/Knocking Problem on 04' WJ I6

Hopefully this thread will help some of the others with a 99-04 WJ with a Inline 6. I wanted to post this up because I don't know what going on but I have

an idea. This started happening maybe a little before summer. I started hearing a clicking noise that start to disturb me a little. Then it got worse over the

period of time. Now it's just loud! I let my Jeep warm up for like 5 minutes after those 5 minutes the clicking/knocking goes away. I will say now it's

knocking. I will thinking this. Either a rocker and maybe I should replace my Spark Plugs. Or Maybe I should check my Timing. Let me remind you I do have

181,000 Miles on it. Does anyone have an idea of it could be. I will try and make a video of it. It goes away completely after the Engine warms up.

I spaced the writing out so it wouldn't be hard to read.

Thanks a lot

My 93 ZJ's I6 used to knock sumthin fierce, changing the plugs and wires helped immensely but did not solve the problem. Maybe someone else can chime in and provide a little more insight.

Re: Clicking/Knocking Problem on 04' WJ I6

It runs perfect but it just makes a annoying clicking sound. I'm going to the dealership soon and going to get some new plugs. It doesn't effect the performance of it.

Re: Clicking/Knocking Problem on 04' WJ I6

I've owned 4.0L I6 engines that "tapped" from day one till they were sold at over 200k miles. Actually it is fairly common with the engine. The sound wasn't soemthing I'd call a "knock" as in louder than a tap and certainly wasn't the sort of "knock" that can usually be eliminated by using a higher octane fuel. However, the tap also never really got any worse as the miles added up. The fact that it is getting louder would have me a little concerned.

Any chance it is an exhaust manifold leak?

A knocking when it is cold doesnt sound good..Could possibly be a bad bearing with that many miles on it..

Re: Clicking/Knocking Problem on 04' WJ I6

This morning it didn't click. I mean I have been noticing it more and more. It's not a knock sorry for that comment. I'm going to do an Oil change anyway. I doubt that would help it. Anyway I'm getting the plugs replaced soon so I will update you guys. Thanks a lot!

Same thing with my old ZJ that erleep has. I don't think it's anything serious but an oil change and a good service will probably help. I have also heard (but never tried) that a 1/4 cup of tranny fluid added to your oil helps to reduce knocking. Now I have never researched that at all so if anyone one would like to refute that, please do.
