Clunking/banging sound from rear suspension?

So i put a BB 3" lift on my jeep about 4yrs ago with 40k miles or so on the vehicle. Within the last 2 or so years i have noticed a hard clanging coming from back there. I put new skyjacker shocks for 3" lift on there and i have looked to see if there is any contact points under there where maybe there is contact. I have seen nothing. I have heard about the isolater/rubber grommet above the rear axle. I put a pry bar inbetween there and could find no play! I am replacing the master cylinder this afternoon so while I am rolling in grease ill crawl under the back and loosen everything while it's on the ground and tighten it up to specs.

I hope someone can shine some information on this problem as it has grown to be very annoying and want to prevent any premature wear and/or breakage.

Re: Clunking/banging sound from rear suspension?

Have a look also at the forward bushings on the triangle, they normally wear out. .
Also have a look if the shock bolts don't have play. I didn't change them on mine and have no noise, but i have heard from others that they changed the bolts for some other type to get rid of the noise.

Also check the rear bushings on the lower control arms although I suspect the shock mounts or sway bar bushings or you would be having serious handling issues.

Re: Clunking/banging sound from rear suspension?

There is a ball joint on the differential housing top. That will cause terrible clunking. The bushings on the upper control arm also can wear and cause these noises. Go under there and have someone rock the vehicle back and forth in park while you look at the bushings and see if the arm moves where the ball joint sits.

Hope this helps,
Brian

If your suspension all checks out, check for play in your U joints. I've heard of people with improper driveshaft angles getting worn and clunky U joints.

Re: Clunking/banging sound from rear suspension?

I had the same problem and after replacing the upper control arm and ball joint. Still there so I went and bought non tappered bolts for the lower bolts on the shocks and the clunking was gone.
