Exclamation codes P0731,P0732,P0734

Help,

I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited with the error codes listed. I'm told that the transmission needs overhauled or the controller is bad.

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

P0731= incorrect 1st gear ratio, P0732= incorrect 2nd gear ratio, P0734= incorrect 4th gear ratio.
I had only the P0733 and had a worn OD clutch in the tranny.
Seeing this codes, your tranny is probably slipping in all gears and not driveable, right? If the jeep is still driveable, the problem could be an input or output speed sensor or wiring.
Was any maintenance done lately? Did you check the fluid level and smell for burnt fluid? Looks like you have lost the hydraulic pressure in the tranny.
It could be that the tranny pan filter is loose, causing air to enter the pump, or even a pump breakdown or heavy internal leak. I would start opening the pan and check the filter first. If its disconnected, the problem is probably that the filter was installed with the seal, instead of installing the seal first and then the filter.

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

The Jeep is still drivable, it jerks like the u-joints are bad. This condition started all at once. I did change the u-joints when this started. I also checked the fluid level. It did not look or smell burnt.

We were thinking of doing a flush and filter change, but have not done it yet.

We did clear the codes to see if they would come back. It did drive good until the codes came back.

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

So is the acceleration normal, or do you see that there is an abnormal slip? When it slips, you see a higher then normal engine rev compared to the acceleration.
The codes that where set mean that the TCM (transmission control module) is seeing an out of range output speed compared to the input speed for the respective gear. It could be a problem with one of the speed sensors or the wiring. Due to the intermittent complaint, i would firstly check very well the wiring from both speed sensors for chaving and remove/clean the connectors of both sensors. You will find them both on the LH side of the tranny, one in the front and one in the back. The front sensor wiring on my car is passing quite close to the gear select cable, so could be a place where shaving occurs.
Who told you that the tranny needs a rebuild? Where any tests done?

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

check the level of your transmission fluid. this could be an issue with a speed sensor, possibly. we would need to know how it drives as frango has already suggested.

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

Frango, Maybe you can help, I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade 4WD which was having issues with 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear. It started sliping a while back, so I changed the tranny fluid and filter and it stopped sliping for about two days. then 4th gear only started sliping again. One thing I noticed you mentioned that the filter seal has to be put in first, the jeep has an oring seal, which i did not put it in first, but installed it with the filter and pushed it in. I turned the over drive off and the Jeep drives fine, the only thing is that I can hit more than 55 mph since 4th gear does not work when the OD is off. Any advice? Also I am getting codes P0700 & P0734 incorrect 4th gear ratio.

Re: codes P0731,P0732,P0734

Welcome to the garage.
Do you know which transmission your jeep has?
If the seal, which i was talking about, came loose, the transmission oil pump would loose its prime and none of the gears would work anymore.
Did you really feel/see that the transmission was slipping?
A slipping transmission in several gears can have to do with a (too) low line pressure. Continue driving like this will cause premature wear to the respective clutch packs and will need a complete overhaul when not repaired soon.
But first need to know which transmission your jeep has before i can try to help further.
P0700 code means that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has set a fault code. You will need a scanner to read the TCM faults, which will help in the trouble shooting and fault rectification.
