Cooling fan 04 4.0

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 Laredo, the cooling fan has stopped working. It is non responsive both to engine temperature as well as to the activation of the ac compressor which is fully operational producing cold air.

I applied voltage to the AC fan from the battery and found it to be operational and moved on to other possibilities.

Initially I was advised to locate a relay under the headlight which was responsible for activating the cooling fan. I do not have one of these and have since been advised my relays were located in the PDC one for high speed and one for low. I have replaced both relays with no change.

I then replaced the coolant temperature sensor located on the thermostat housing which also produced no changes.

I have been seeing threads regarding something called an AC transducer which may be responsible for telling the PDC to activate the cooling fan at high speed. Does this device also tell the PDC to activate the fan at low speed during engine operation and change to high speed through a change in resistance?

I am lost at this point as to what else it could be and my local dealer insists I have to buy the entire line where the transducer is mounted which is very expensive.

ANY help on this matter would be greatly appreciated I have found many threads about this in the V8 models relationship with the hydraulic fan system but little on my 4.0.

Re: Cooling fan 04 4.0

I presume that you already changed the fan motor fuse, #10 (40A) in the PDC?
It is the PCM which makes the ground signal for the low speed or high speed relay to activate. Did you try both the low speed and high speed part of the fan motor?
At this point i donīt see the AC transducer to be the problem yet.

A second fan from another jeep of the same model was connected (but not installed) to see if it was the fan. The other fan did not come on at start up nor did it come on with AC activation.

Re: Cooling fan 04 4.0

Just put the Fan clutch upgrade and never worry about the electric fans!

belt driven cooling fan mounts right on the water pump.

Appeared to be intact but was changed to cover that base after the start of this discussion.

I should also note that the vehicle will not take Freon. I had decided to add some after the AC didn't feel quite as cold as it should but I now know that's happening at stops because my engine is getting hot. Anyway the pressure gauge on my bottle goes way over into the red and the bottle does not discharge any Freon.

It could be over charged or you have clogged orifice tube, You need Both High and Low pressures to correctly see how the A/C system is going. but Your Low should really never been above 50-60 suction even in 95F temps.

If your WJ had tow package it would of have Had Heavy Duty Fan package the CLutch fan and Electric fan

You can easily add the clutch fan to the WJ 4.0

your water pump probably has a plastic piece over the threads. Clutch just screws right on to it.

Re: Cooling fan 04 4.0

I had a 2000 WJ that had the fan fail. The relay for the electric fan is actually under the passenger side headlight, and attached to the inner fender. I had to remove the front bumper and cut a hole in the plastic header panel to access it. Once I replaced the relay, it was operational again.

Re: Cooling fan 04 4.0

Did you try and remove the temperature sensor connector and then switch the ignition to run. Without the temperature input, the PCM should switch the cooling fan to high speed.
