Cooling Fan Relay

A couple of months ago I changed the cooling fan relay and even made the famous window for future replacements.Yesterday while I was aligning my new hids,I noticed the fan was not moving and looked inside to check the temp and sure enough the check engine light was on and the temp was high. When I went to the parts store I always go to he told me he keeps them in stock because someone always needs it.He even showed me that he sells two different kinds and one he sold 68 last year and the other he sold 29.I know Jeep has to know about it but unless I missed it,I have not heard of a recall. Is there a secret trick or something that I can do or something to make the relay last longer?Maybe I'll just buy a case of these and sell them around the neighborhood.

Re: Cooling Fan Relay

The relay should not go out in a couple months... I am sorry and this wont be satisfactory, but this is just a crappy part, and the fact that your aftermarket one went out in a couple months shows the difference between the aftermarket replacement and the factory one that lasted approx 8 years.

Re: Cooling Fan Relay

Chrysler knew about the problem. On the 04 they used two relays - one for high and one for low speed. They also put the two relays at the rear of the PDC next to the battery. So far I have not had a problem.

Re: Cooling Fan Relay

I actually found out it was the fan motor. The fan would only work at a low speed & when it had to speed up it would stop & blow the relay. I wish I would've found that out 2 relays ago. I replaced it with a new factory fan & relay. I guess you I paid to live & learn.

Re: Cooling Fan Relay

I'm wondering if the fan motor is bad on my daughters 2001 Grand Cherokee? Not sure if it has 2 speeds, but it has went through 3 relays in as many weeks. Mechanic says 1st two were from Chrysler. I made him put a Standard Motor Products one on a few days ago, but would like to not have to return there again. Should I just have the fan motor replaced as a precautionary measure? It will cost me $100 for motor and $130 labor to have it installed.

Re: Cooling Fan Relay

I would definitely have them check out the fan and the fuse. One of my friends at work recently found out that the fuse was bad after changing his relay twice.
