Cooling fan replacement

I have a '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I replaced the water pump and radiator in June and now I noticed the temp gauge going up when A/C is on and I am idling or stopped. I brought it to the mechanic today and they told me the cooling fan needed to be replaced and it's going to be $1,520.00. Does this sound right? I know mechanics upcharge parts, etc., but I see that part online for $85 tops. Is this something I could replace on my own rather easily? I have done some minor work on cars successfully with the help of Youtube. Some advice as to what I should do would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Cooling fan replacement

Welcome to the garage. Which engine do you have? The 4.7 has a hydraulic cooling fan, while the 4.0 has an electrical fan with relays. (for the 04 model there should be two relays in the PDC under the hood). I presume that the fuses where checked by the mechanic and the relays as well? The price seems to be steep for when it is an electrical cooling fan only.

Re: Cooling fan replacement

I have the 4.7L...The mechanic made it sound like I had an electrical fan, but I should replace it with the hydraulic..?

Re: Cooling fan replacement

The 04 GC 4.7l has a hydraulic cooling fan setup. Does the unit make noises, or is there a fault code set regarding the fan? This unit is very expensive, but many times only the control solenoid is faulty.
