Decisions, Decisions

Morning Everyone,
This post mirrors my Newbie thread... Just bought a 2004 4.7 Jeep GC Limited with 96k on it. Three weeks into owning this one it has been in the shop more days than I've been able to drive it. The coolant keeps disappearing from the reservoir and isn't going onto the ground and there isn't any heater core issue. It is definately being burnt off and being released through the exhaust as you can really smell it (only outside).

Originally after it ran for a while the smell mostly dissipated and there wasn't much for white smoke anymore but it would come back after being turned off and sitting for a while and then restarted. I took it to my mechanic who said it definately was a head gasket issue. He put it in and looked everything over when engine was apart to verify there weren't any other problems. He drove it for 12 or so miles and everything seemed good. When I drove it to my house and brought it to park in the garage I noticed the smoke was back with the same smell.

The coolant disappears from the reservoir even faster now (no leaks on the ground). The smoke is now white with a blueish tint to it. Don't know why that would be. I brought it back to the mechanic this morning. You guys have any idea what could be causing this to happen?

Luckily the dealer is paying for all the fixes so far. Whew! They made mention to me that they may consider buying it back from me once they get a diagnosis from the mechanic again. Besides wanting to know what is wrong with this Jeep, I'm also wondering if I should take the dealer buy back option if it is presented? I'm assuming they'll require me to buy another Jeep on their lot which I'd want to do anyways. I have a long standing relationship with them and know this Jeep's problems were unknown to them ahead of my purchase as they just got it in from an out of state auction the day I took it home.

If you think I should go with the buy back option, I have a couple options at the lot that I don't know which to go with... Both Jeeps are 2008 GC Limited's with about 45k on them. One is a 4.7 and the other is the 5.7. Which do I pick? I'm not worried about towing capacity, or HP. My main concern is flat out engine reliability. Secondary concerns are cost of maintenance and MPG.

Thanks in advance for the help!
Curt

Can't speak for reliability, but the 5.7 will be a tad more costly to maintain. Plugs, oil etc. I would still pick the hemi, the platform will most likely be around for years to come, as the 4.6 platform seems to be phasing out of production if it's not out already. edit:4.7l

Re: Decisions, Decisions

Sounds like a head gasket or intake issue. Personally id let them buy it back and take ur pic, both are very reliable engines, the 5.7 would have higher maintenance costs imo. The 4.7 will have better fuel economy, expecially in the city, but really fuel economy and jeep shouldnt be used in the same sentence.

Re: Decisions, Decisions

Thanks for the comments so far! Would there be any options that are a must have or a must not get? Seems the dealer has three 5.7 limiteds and one 4.7 limited. Trying to figure out which to go with. Because of the number of 5.7 limiteds on the market I thought that maybe the 4.7 would be a better pick because the 5.7 crowd was getting rid of theirs. Maybe the 4.7 was really just purchased less often when new?

Haven't heard from the mechanic yet on a diagnosis.

Well the hemi's would have the quadra driveII system standard which seems the most desirable, the 4.7's would have that as an option and the quadra trac II standard (someone correct me if this is wrong, I know the options varied by year.) Again the better system is more costly to maintain but that would have been my first choice with everything else being equal.

For me everything else is just convenience related e.g. leather, stereo etc.

Re: Decisions, Decisions

My buddy had this problem with the 4.7 in his Dakota. The head was warped and even after having it trued up and new head gaskets done after a month or so it happened again. I think once these heads warp the engine is done. I love my 4.7 and I think as long as you're careful to never overheat it it will be fine. He did have over 100,000 miles on it and towed a very heavy trailer to Wyoming with it which overheated the trans and probably the motor as well.

Re: Decisions, Decisions

I went with the 4.7. Got a 2008 today. It's awesome. Only 20,000 on it.
