Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

Aaron have you done any high torque launches lately? You may have broken an axle shaft. I think I'd pull that side and take a look. Those front Dana's are notoriously weak. Never broke an axle shaft myself but I've split the spider gears in half twice on a couple of Magnum V8 Dakotas doing 4wd holeshots. So I try not to push mine TOO hard That's definitely not your issue though. Shoot 2005JGC a pm and see what he thinks bro.

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

Hi Aaron,
Have you driven on the grass and floored it to see how many wheels spin?
Paul.

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

I vote for a broken axel. We had this happen to ours at around 10k miles.

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

Aaron this is the test procedure for the diff but if you sheared the axle shaft you won't get the right results either. You should be able to see the ends of the axle in the side gears with the diff cover off. If you're turning a wheel and it's not turning the side gear either you broke a shaft or took out the splines. Good luck bud.

Vari-Lok Test

PRIMING 1.Park the vehicle on a level surface or raise vehicle on hoist so that the vehicle is level. 2.Remove the axle fill plug. 3.Verify that the axle fluid level is correct. The fluid level is correct if the fluid is level with the bottom of the fill hole. 4.Shift the transfer case into the 4WD full-time position. 5.Drive the vehicle in a tight circle for 2 minutes at 5mph to fully prime the pump. TEST PROCEDURE 1.Block the tires opposite the axle to be tested to prevent the vehicle from moving. 2.Shift the transfer case into the 4WD Low position and the transmission into the Park position. 3.Raise both the wheels of the axle to be tested off of the ground. 4.Rotate the left wheel by hand at a minimum of one revolution per second while an assistant rotates the right wheel in the opposite direction. 5.The left wheel should spin freely at first and then increase in resistance within 5 revolutions until the wheels cannot be continuously rotated in opposite directions. 6.The Vari-Lok differential has engaged properly if the wheels cannot be rotated in opposite directions for a moment. After the wheels stop rotating for a moment, the fluid pressure will drop in the differential and the wheels begin to rotate once again. 7.If the system does not operate properly, replace the Vari-Lok differential.

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

^Great info Dave! Cheers for that. Paul, never thought to try running it on wet grass.

I'll give that test a go. Doesn't look too promising does it? Bugger!

Not yet Paul. Been too busy. I've got tons of orders to fulfill by Christmas and as a result my workshop (which I use to work on my Jeep) is a no go area without full PPE. There's been 2k clear sprayed every day and I have to give it 48 hours to clear the air.

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

With the Electric locker that they use for the quadradrive 2 system . Its possible the other wheel will not spin unless the locker is engaged .

The front does not have limited slip like the rear. Its on or off. jeep installed the Eaton Elocker

here is a link to the elocker
ELocker Differentials

so it should be normal to have the front wheel not spin .

here is a link on some of the models with the e-locker
http://csloffroad.com/jeepzjxjwjaxleinfo.aspx

this is far fetched but being its a NON -US model , Its possible

Here is Dana Parts PDF - this will contain all the factory part numbers
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-6.pdf

I bring this up because ,before they put the vari-lock in ,I believe they had a few years of the e-locker being installed

Re: Drive to three wheels only ???

if its a e-locker , you should have a wire or plug coming out at the top of the Diff. (somewhere)
