Engine Bay Ticking

2003 WJ Laredo, 4.0L I6, 85k miles

For the past few weeks I have noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine bay at random times. It's only noticeable when the truck is in idle. Be it in park or at a stop light. It's also not there all the time, it seems to be at random. Since the 4.0L engine is known to chatter, I chalked it up as valve train noise.

At lunch today, I parked and heard it. I popped the hood to see if it was coming from the valve cover and it wasn't. It was coming from a valve on the driver's side of the engine bay. I could hold the valve and feel it ticking. See picture.

(Sorry for the blacked out finger. A classy guy at work was being classy)

It was cold out so I didn't look to see where the lines went. Does anyone know what this is and how to make it stop ticking? I'm guessing it's the EGR valve but haven't checked it out yet. Apparently it's common on the 4.0L, because my buddy has a 2000 Cherokee w/ the 4.0L and his does the same thing (but his is on the passenger side).

Re: Engine Bay Ticking

That is the EVAP/purge solenoid and its normal that its ticking. The PCM sends pulses to this solenoid to clear the EVAP canister from fuel vapors. Why it works sometimes and sometimes not, i have no idea. On mine it is normally working when the engine temp is at normal level and not when its cold..

If I replaced it, would the new one tick just as loud? Man I hate all this emissions crap.

Re: Engine Bay Ticking

I have no idea if a new valve would make less noise, but i know what the reason of the noise is and it will not harm anything. Maybe you could try to isolate the valve better by using a thicker and more flexible type of rubber. Maybe the problem is that the rubber mounting is getting stiff after some time, passing the valve noise to the body.

Re: Engine Bay Ticking

Another totally normal 4.0L Jeep noise. Had that on my XJ and TJ. It sounds like a stun gun/taser...ticking every second. Cool vehicles make noises.

Yeah, I'm seeing that it's normal. Normal or not, it's annoying and I don't like it. Something will be done to make it quiet.

But cool vehicles do make noises. That's why I had my exhaust dumped on my Mustang.

Re: Engine Bay Ticking

An easy fix is to just cut off the muffler and you'll never hear it Seriously though there's not much you're going to be able to do to quiet that thing except maybe wrapping it up with something.

Re: Engine Bay Ticking

I think that changing the rubber mount for something more flexible will reduce the noise significantly.
