EVIC Problem

The EVIC overhead console is showing signs of a problem. I park inside a heated garage so the Jeep stays warm even if it's 12 deg F outside like this morning. If I go out the EVIC seems to look normal, maybe because it's warm. After I go somewhere and leave the Jeep outside perhaps an hour or two in this cold temperature, the Jeep starts up fine, runs great like normal, but the EVIC and all console buttons do not work. The buttons are back lite, but at night, if cold, do not lite up and the EVIC does not lite up either. The buttons which I programed to operate the garage door are not functional either. I noticed this one evening while driving home during a cold night. Even after the interior warmed up, all was still off at least until I shut off the ignition and restarted the engine. Then everything lite up and worked fine. This has happened several times now. Warm interior, all works, cold interior, EVIC and console appears to be dead. Any ideas?

I am refreshing this request for help as i have not had any responses to this problem with my overhead console system. Cold conditions seem to render this system dead while warm conditions bring it back to working order. Maybe a bad ground connection somewhere that the cold can make a difference. Any ideas?

Tony Norton seems to have diagnosed his as being a problem with the shifter. See the post here

The shifter problem from Tony should not be the problem here, since the shifter assy from the CRD is connected to the PCI data bus (and could bring the bus down when the shifter assy has internal problems), but the gasoline version has no PCI bus interface.
Also in this case it seems that all power disappears from the EVIC. There are two fuses powering the EVIC, fuse 8 and 22 on the junction block. Would be interresting to see if this power is still available when the problem arrises. Also check ground G301. I would also check the EVIC printed board for eventual loose solder(s). There is an EVIC selftest which could show more, however when the EVIC has no power, you will not see a thing:

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST
A self-diagnostic test is used to determine that the
EVIC module is operating properly, and that all PCI
data bus messages are being received for initial operation.
Initiate the self-diagnostic test as follows:
(1) With the ignition switch in the Off position,
simultaneously depress and hold the C/T button and
the Reset button.
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.
(3) Continue to hold both buttons depressed until
the EVIC software version information is displayed,
then release both buttons.
(4) Following completion of these tests, the EVIC
module will display one of the following messages:
a.
Pass Self Test - Momentarily depress and
release the Reset button to return to the compass/
temperature/trip computer display mode. The EVIC
module is working properly.
b.
Failed Self Test - The EVIC module has an
internal failure. The EVIC module is faulty and must
be replaced.
c.
Not Receiving J1850 Message - The EVIC
module is not receiving proper message input
through the PCI data bus. This can result from one
or more faulty electronic modules in the vehicle, or
from a faulty PCI data bus. The use of a DRB scan
tool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures manual

are required for further diagnosis.

Hi I've read this thread and tried to reset my C/T a number of times and even reset the car by disconnecting the battery and depressing the brake pedal.

The compass seems to work but the temperature reads -40°. When I reset it the compass gives a reading and the numerical reading starts at 359 and counts down. After all that it reads -40°.

Any ideas? Another issue I've had since the last service when they disconnected the battery is the A/C does not remain as I left it when I shuit off the car. When I start it again the A/C is off althought I had left it switched on.

Last thing, I have looked and cannot find the link to download the manual.

My vehicle is a 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited RHD VIN 1J8G858N34Y136210.

A constant -40 indication means that the temperature sensor circuit is open. Could be the sensor, or a wire breakage.
Regarding the AC that is strange. The AC should in fact always be in on after the ignition is switched off/on, independent on how it was switched before. This seems to be a problem of the AC control head.
I wish my jeep was working like that, donīt like to switch the AC in off every time i switch the ignition in on.
Try some googling on the service manual. I bought my 2004 manual, but also downloaded lateron 99-00 and 01-04 manuals for free, but the site where i got it from doesnīt have it anymore.

Thanks for all that. I've decided to retackle the problem. Do you know wher the outside temperature sensor is located? It seems to be it may just be disconnected. I'll report back once it's fixed.

The ambient temperature sensor sits just behind the grill on the right hand side, seen from drivers position.

Whatever happened to Me Fix as I have the same problem. Back when I started this thread, it was very cold. Once the weather warmed up, the problem went away. So I figured, "you can't fix something that is not broken".

Well, it's cold again and the problem is back. I never did follow up on the suggestions from Frango, but I will now. It's nice to know this thread is still active and I can find past suggestions. I will follow up shortly.
