Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Hey everyone. Can use help with what would cause the outside exhaust fumes from other autos to enter my cabin with a/c set on internal circulation?? Just 2 days ago had cabin filter installed and evaporator coil cleaned due to a chemical like smell with a/c on or off.
Can only smell the cleaning fluid coverup but now the outside air is breeching into the cabin. Any ideas????

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Could be a bad recirc door or actuator. check this out to run the diagnostics and check for codes: http://wjjeeps.com/climate.htm

Read down to where it tells you how to get the codes, and then report what codes are listed, if any.

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

ODBII might be your only hope, did you install the air filter yourself?

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

First of, do you have the manual airco system, or the automatic one?
Before installing the filter, you didnīt have this problem of the exhaust fumes smell, or was the smell of the funguss on the evaporator coil overwhelming everything else?
But either way, as 01grand said, it seems to be a problem with the recirculation door/actuator. Depending on manual or automatic system, the actuator is or vacuum or electrical motor controlled.

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Thank you for all your responses. I will run the diagnostic codes (just watched a you tube on that as I didn't know what that was nor what ODBII was).

The filter kit was put in by an excellent Benz mechanic (I was refered to him by my client as a source I could trust). He was just helping me out out of kindness since he only works on benz cars. I have had many unnecessary costly repairs. I am here on this site to educate myself, troubleshoot and be able to communicate better with the mechanics so not to get taken again. Maybe even learn to do some repairs myself so thanks again to everyone.
No I did not smell the exhaust prior to the filter installation or it was covered up by that odor I smelled (which was like light bleech or ozone ish). Now thats gone and I get outside air on recirculation and when not around other cars I get poor quality smelling air (mustyish).
I have an automatic system.
Thanks again, be back with the codes...Iam sure I have a few.

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Ok I did the OBD2 thing and it only said done.
I did the azc self dx thing and the only fault code that came up and stayed was 52.
Now what? Looking on the chart it says AI door travel range too large.
My next move? Suggestions please.
Thank you

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Travel too large faults are tipically a broken end stop and /or broken recirculation door. Did you remove the blower motor to see if the recirculation door is broken or not? If it seems to be ok (you can let it move by pressing the recirc button with ignition on, take care that the blower motor is disconnected), you could reset the system by disconnecting the battery for a minute or so and see if the fault comes back. But when you smell external fumes with the recirculation door in internal position, there is most probably something wrong with the recirc door.
If the door seems to be ok and moves open/close and the electrical motor stops at those positions (you can hear it from the low volume noise), you could try to calibrate the system. The procedure for calibration is mentioned on www.wjjeeps.com (tons of very interresting information on this site)
And the OBDII would only tell you problems for engine related systems. A DRBIII could do something in the airco system, but the built-in self diagnostic system should be enough to find faults in the automatic AC system.

Re: Exhaust fumes entering cabin

Thank you Frango100. I was told that the blower motor would be looked at but I am not sure if that happened but I will find out. I would guess so as my mat on the passengers side has some "stuff" on it whereas before there was nothing but a clean mat.

From what you said and what I searched it looks like if the door is broken I have a choice to pin it open or pin it shut....to avoid taking the dash off ?

Thank you for the info and sites. I will keep you posted..Can't stand the exhaust fumes as I sit in traffic alot
