fan clutch???

hello everybody got my first jeep not too long ago. had a quick question to see if you guys can help me. my laredo 4.0 2wd when in park it seems like the fan turns on and off too quick. Temperature Gage seem to be fine at the right temperature. the fan will turn one every 10 to 15 seconds and only last for about 2-3 seconds.

The fan spins but the clutch is what i believe make the fan spin faster and i can hear the click from when it engages and the revs slightly increase.

If anybody has any input on this it would be greatly appreciated. if you need any more info let me know.

Re: fan clutch???

Does your jeep have the electrical fan and mechanical viscous coupling driven fan on the waterpump?
Is the mechanical fan engaging and disengaging?

Re: fan clutch???

i dont think theres an electrical fan, not that i have noticed and yea the machanical fan is what i beleive is engaging and disengaging.

Reason im pretty sure about this is because i know how it sounds for example on other cars when you turn you A/C on you hear the fan kick on. well its pretty much the same sound but only for a couple seconds.

Re: fan clutch???

Seems that newer models where equiped with both electrical and the viscous drive fan. The quick switching of the fan is probably due to a bad viscous drive.

Re: fan clutch???

so would it be a problem with the electrical that makes it engage or the actual viscous fa?
Any ideas on how to fix this? Because we know it works but what ever tells it to turn on or off is not working correctly

Re: fan clutch???

The viscous drive fan is completely mechanically switched. It has a bimetallic sensor on the front of the drive, which is in the hot radiator airstream, and which will activate the fan. When cold, the fan still will rotate with around 300 rpm.
So you probably need a new viscous drive.
