Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

Ok, I know I'm not faster than an electron, yet sometimes when opening
the drivers door, I can actually get the key out and the door open before
the security system is disabled generating lots of flashing lights and honking
of the horn. Just starting the engine has disabled the system as it now
recognizes that the proper key is installed. Today, however, was a little
different. The horn just started honking continuously with nothing touching
the unlocked vehicle. I have the battery disconnected while I search for help.

Any ideas as to where to start looking?

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

You are the Lucky Luck of the electrons.
Don't you have a keyfob to unlock the doors?
There is a switch in the drivers door lock which should deactivate the alarm when a key is used to unlock the door. This switch is most probably your problem.

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

Well Frango, this morning I used the key fob to unlock the vehicle. It sat,
unused for a couple of hours, then the horn started sounding continuously.
Not beeping. It sounded more like the horn(s) had been shorted on. I tried
every button on the fob. Nothing worked. I started the engine and the horn
kept sounding. I removed the fuse(position 18) and now the horn is non-functioning, but I noticed that position 37 is also labeled "horn". Is this
the horn relay, and if so how can I check it?

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

Can not find any fuse 37. Is it in the pdc under the hood?
Did you already try and swap the horn relay itself?
It will gets its ground or from the horn switch in the steering wheel (via clockspring), or via the BCM. From the BCM is the alarm function.

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

Yes, it is in the PDC under the hood, and I found (via ebay) that it is,
in fact, a relay. OMRON 21911. Since I don't know how to troubleshoot
this relay, I guess I'll pick one up tomorrow and plug and play. I'll post
the results.

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

The layout i have from the PDC doesn´t show numberings for the relays. You could eventually swap the horn relay with the AC compressor relay for testing purposes, or buy a new one right away.
Since the horn sounded continuously, it can not be the vehicle alarm (BCM) causing the problem. If swapping the relay or a new relay doesn´t solve the problem, then you will have to look for shaved wiring or maybe a problem with the clockspring in the steering wheel.
But still strange that the problem started with as it seems the alarm which was honking the horn, and now a continuous horn, which should not come from the alarm system.

Re: Faster Than An Electron/Horn Honking

Well, it's not the relay. A new relay yields the same results.....a continuously
sounding horn. When I checked the contacts for the relay, it's obvious that
I have a shorted wire somewhere. My guess is the clockspring or somewhere
else in the column. I might try the compass trick I just found in a moto
forum to narrow the search. Luckily I don't live in an area where the horn
is a necessary driving aid. And thanks to this forum I can now key lock the car
while disabling the alarm.
