Exclamation finally Replacing rad and water pump on my 4.0 i6

I managed to scrub up some $ for fixing up my Jeep if you guys don't know my cooling system completely failed resulting in my radiator to shatter into pieces(literally) see Possible blown engine on my Jeep :/ for pictures.

so down to it I will be doing the job myself being that it doesn't too hard to accomplish this is what needs to be replaced.

1: Radiator - which i have no idea what brand (quality wise) i should buy
2: water pump - again not the slightest clue what brand i should get

i'm not looking for cheapy parts but i would like to knowm, if anyone has input, what brands are most reliable?

You will also want to get a new upper and lower hose. The current ones might look ok but its a lot easier to change them when putting on a new rad versus having them crack and leak at another time. Might as well do a new thermostat while you have the system apart. Cheap insurance.

I believe mine was a Spectra brand, it seemed to be good quality. Go to rockauto.com and compare prices to a local shop, but had I ordered from there I would have saved over $100 on all the parts. Good luck! I remember your last posts, that was one nasty failure!

I gave my neighbor the same advice as he was tearing into his 4.0l wj to replace the radiator... he looked at me like I was crazy, he didnt understand how it could be that bad. the fit is VERY tight around the frame rails and the steering gear really gets in the way. That night when I came home from work he just stared at me with the front of his jeep still all torn apart and he said "you were right". Not only that in the process of fighting the new radiator in he damaged his condensor.

Anyway, if the car is parked just take your time and be patient and you will get it no doubt!

This is my advice I had posted on another forum on the center fan shroud bolts just so you don't get caught off guard:
Get a junk 10 mm open end wrench and bend it in a vise to almost 90 degrees,label it"stupid frickin Jeep engineer shroud tool"turn the nuts loose 1/4 turn at a time(they will come off)remove shroud after pulling clutch fan,reassemble spending another
half hour tightening those 2 damn nuts, then throw said specialty tool in dumpster hoping to never see it again.At least that's what I did

This bolt is easily accessable with this...



this along with a 3' 1/4" drive extension will allow you to get onto this bolt with little fuss. NOTE: a swivel socket WONT work, it MUST be a shallow universal 1/4" drive socket.

There are a lot of them out there where the studs are actually pushed against the frame rails so tight that there is no hope of getting any socket on there until you get it broken loose and the stud starts to wobble.The wife's '99 was one of those.The drivers side was the worst because of the maze of hoses you had to work around.Looks like your setup would work on the '04 though it doesn't look near as tight.I remember really wanting to meet the engineer responsible for the cooling system that day

I am speaking from experience as I have done a number of wj radiators... that is why THIS and only this is what I suggested and not just a swivel 10mm or a 10mm and a universal joint. The universal 1/4" drive shallow 10mm socket from snapon WILL fit over the bolt and make MUCH quicker work of it. The extension is to get the ratchet out above the differential (huge angle thus the need for the universal). If your having a hard time getting on the bolt undo all the stuff on top and the front radiator mount bolts (with the big washers) and pull the radiator forward and viola, you have more space to get on the bolt.
