id clean the IAC with a wire brush carefull not to move the little plunger in or out, then but a TPS cuz its like 30 dollars for that model, if nto any of that try the coolant temp sensor cuz that will do that quite often and not throw a code, battery too.

Usually strange issues with idling (as well as dying at low RPMs) is a sign of battery corrosion.
Try cleaning the IAC.. if it has a lot of corrosion, there's your answer. You might possibly even need to replace it. I've had this same issue more than once and have seen it a lot on the 4.7 as well.

just my 2c but i had very similar problems with my 4.0 I6 2k1 WJ and i replaced the battery terminals and the majority of my problems have gone by the wayside

yup! New battery's got my vote, but the sensors could also be the problem.
