While you have the cover off, clean the internals by spraying them down with brake parts cleaner and let it run out into a drain pan. The inside of the diff should be nice and clean. Re-install the cover as described here, but make sure you don't re-fill with fluid right away. Let it sit overnight. Get a good scraper...that gasketing on there takes a little elbow grease.
