Smile Front diff noise

Hello everyone. I am new on this site. I have a question on a front diff. I have a 2003 Grand Cherokee Overland. We have spent so much money on her.We put in a new rear hub and bearing and seals. We have put in New shocks all around. The motor has new plugs and radiator flushed. And to the front. One of the seals was leaking so we had seals and bearings put in but now we have a problem. There is aloud humming noise starting at 35 mph to 55 mph. As we go faster it gets louder. There are very very small shaving in the oil. We have emptied all fluids to get in there to see where the shavings are coming from. We cannot see anything we checked the repair work and could not see anything. I was thinking could the pinion create this to happen or what is going on. It is a Dana 30 with hydro lok. That is what is on the cover. Is the wording hydro lok the same as Vari lok ? So can anyone give me a idea where to go next. I keep getting poorer everyday. So glad I found this site.

Re: Front diff noise

Could be that when the new bearings where put into the diff, that the backlash adjustment was not (properly) set. When you drive at the speed where the noise appears and you put the tranny in Neutral, does the noise level reduze significantly? If yes, the ring gear backlash could be set wrongly.
When you have metal shavings, but donīt see any damage/wear to pinion or ring gear, there is probably a bearing going bad.

Re: Front diff noise

Thank you for the answer. But I am new at repairs on a Jeep. I need to ask. Where would I find the ring gear backlash adjustments ? I don't want to sound like I don't know much but I am the wife asking. I use to do a lot of the work.

Re: Front diff noise

Thanks again. I figured it all out. And yes your right. Some days are better then others and today I am not happy with the work someone else was suppose to do correctly.
