Re: Front differential issue

Cheers Dave

I keep forgetting I have that service manual:

So yeah, it does look like the axle shaft just slides out

Now has anyone fitted the cv joint to the axle? All I can find for sale (avoiding the dealers) is just the joint itself.

Oh and just been hit (from the dealership) for approximately $54 for a pinion seal!!!!!

I've seen some listed for $12 but no idea what diff I have.

Re: Front differential issue

Well after all that guess what was making the noise??? A brake pad!! The pa had actually de-laminated from itself!

Good excuse to fit the akebonos and ceramic pads at long last

Re: Front differential issue

Hi Aaron,
Was this noise happening all the time or just when cornering / braking?
Cheers
Paul.

All the time mate. You could also feel it in the accelerator pedal.

Re: Front differential issue

I have just received my 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited, right hand drive. There is an issue making slow maneuvers with the front differential. It feels as though it is locked. When turning at slow speed the front wheels judder like they are skipping sideways to the tread. Severe under steer. On the move it is fine and when accelerating just at slow parking speeds.

Does anyone have any advice? The wheels are stock and fitted with Pirelli Scorpions.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the garage.
You most probably have a Quadra Drive jeep? This behaviour happens normally on this type of jeep due to a too low amount of friction modifier in the diff. The friction modifier (also called limited slip additive) is there to allow a small amount of slip in the vari-Lock diff, which is necessary when making turns (inner wheel travels less then outer wheel, so a totally locked diff would cause a wheel to skip). You could just add the modifier, or when you don´t know the service history, just change the diff fluid and add the modifier.
0.07l or 2.5 oz. of friction modifier needed per diff.
If you jeep doesn´t have Quadra Drive, then have a look at the fluid level in the T-case.

Re: Front differential issue

Terrific - I hope I can find the modifier here. Yes, the symptoms indicate the diff isn't slipping. Do you happen to know a substitute for the modifier or its composition?

Thanks.

You should be able to buy the additive at the dealer. There are also fluids which have the additive already mixed in it. Fluid type 75W140 synthetic. I don' t know of any brand substitute, but ask around at some parts shops.

Re: Front differential issue

I have been unsuccessful in locating 75W140 synthetic and the additive. Do you know how much fluid is required? I can get the 75W140 synthetic online and have it shipped. Where could I find the additive online?

Thanks in advance.
