Good radiator replacement

I need to replace a leaking radiator on my '04 Laredo Sport 4.0 I6. I just started a new job so my funds are limited, but I need to take care of this problem before it gets worse.
I have seen radiators from $80 to $150 on ebay with free shipping. My local AutoZone is in the $150 range. I will be replacing the upper and lower hoses as well.
Any preferrences and or advise would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Good radiator replacement

Get everything from rockauto.com, use this coupon code for 5% off: 85678997047635

I have had good luck with the parts I have ordered from them, they make it easy to find items that ship together to save shipping costs (a little truck icon by the description once you have something in the cart), and their prices are almost always cheaper than local even after shipping. Good luck!

Also, get a new cap while you are at it, cheap part to complete the replacement and make sure you are getting the right pressure inside. Also fyi, Spectra makes a good radiator, thats what I have.

Re: Good radiator replacement

I just checked, for my 4.7L I can get the radiator, both hoses, and cap for $144 so yours should be in the same neighborhood.

Re: Good radiator replacement

Just returned from Miami this morning with a new radiator and a lot of other stuff. Bought it all with Rockauto.com.
Spectra Premium radiator for $ 108.79, Gates upper hose for $ 8.36, Gates lower hose for $ 8.91 and Gates radiator cap for $ 2.36. I still have a new thermostat laying around and just ordered a new thermostat seal from Felpro for $ 1.19.
Total $ 129.61.
Will install the radiator tomorrow, but the first impression is that its made of good quality material.

Re: Good radiator replacement

Are the rads prone to braking in WJs or something? Never really heard of them being replaced unless a rock damages them on any other car tbh...

Re: Good radiator replacement

On mine a crack appeared in the plastic reservoir where it attaches to the aluminum core. There is a small leak, but with the pressure inside the radiator, the crack can grow quickly, causing a part of the platic reservoir to be blown away and all liquid to be lost in no time. I already saw some histories about this here on jeepgarage. To be able to use my car until my new radiator came in (today), i just damaged the inner seal of the radiator cap, so that no pressure was build up and the change of blowing the radiator was almost zero. The downside was that the cooling liquid started to boil at 100 C, just 1 above the normal operating temperature.

I had the same issue, the plastic tank and aluminum core heat and expand at different rates and can eventually crack.

Re: Good radiator replacement

I've had 2 4.0L's...and both of them got new radiators for this reason. So far the WJ's 4.7L radiator has been leak free.

Don't worry it's still young...

That said I had a 4.0L ZJ with over 200k on the stock radiator. Wish I could say the same for the tranny....
