Re: Groaning

So is the noise only there backing out, or always when making a turn? Which system your jeep has, Qudra trac ou Quadra Drive?

Re: Groaning

Have you checked the diff fluid? Frank's right about the pump makig a noise on full lock, mine does it too and there's nothing wrong with anything.

Not checked anything yet. But if it was the diff fluid would it not make the noise full time?

Just checked the steering pump reservoir and it is ssssooooooo low. That means that could be the culprit, so much for a service from the dealer then! I will fill tomorrow and then make plans for a full fluid change, any idea how much the stealers would charge for this?

Re: Groaning

Indeed the power steering pump makes a moaning noise when the fluid level is too low. No idea what the dealer will charge you, but it will probably be too much
No signs of leaks anywhere?
Knowing now that the maintenance was probably not done that rigorously, a full service off all oils, fluids and filters would be recomendable. Also good to check the spark plugs.

Re: Groaning

I think I was about £9.00 something mate and that was from the dealer. I'd need to check my receipts, but it's not expensive. Check what colour you have, because there's two different kinds

Re: Groaning

Ok, a little update for you.

filled the power steering reservoir up to its correct level and took the jeep for a test drive, all seemed fine. Decided that I would do a U turn with full lock and the noise was back!, not only back but you can still hear it with the steering wheel turned for driving around a left or right hand turn, not as loud but still there. Straight ahead it fine and normal bendy roads ok, turn left or right turns or full lock then the noise is back increasing in sound with the amount of lock on.
It sounds really serious, but I have no knowledge of these things so thats no help.

On top of all that, the spare has a very large nail in it, the central locking does not work and it looks very much like zero maintenance has been done on this vehicle since it left the factory.

HELP! Do I take it back and get my money back or get a full service done with all fluids and hope that sorts it out, it is a 2000 but only has 38k on the mileage born out by the old MOTs?

Re: Groaning

I'd check the fluids first. If you put it in for a full service you'd be well into £800 at a dealer and maybe half that independantly. That said if there's been little maintenance done over it's life, a service may prove futile.
It's obviously been sitting for a lot of it's life if it has such a low mileage and that in itself can be a bad thing.

If I were you and I'd tried everything I knew how to, I'd take it into a good local garage and get them to give it the once over. Should cost no more than £40 (and that's pushing it)

Re: Groaning

My thoughts are I take it back and get another one with maybe a few more miles but better looked after.

Re: Groaning

If you've got that option mate I'd go for that, for sure. It's paramount that these vehicles are properly maintained. These engines will go for miles and miles.
