Re: Groaning

Regarding the noise while turning the steering wheel, there can be some air in the system left. You should do some 10 full turns from left to right to get all air out. Never leave the steering wheel in full lock for more then 10 sec., because the steering pump will produce full pressure and it will reduce its usefull life. If your car has the hydraulic cooling fan option, removing the coolant temp sensor connector (in between the airco compressor and generator), will put the fan in high speed and will add in removing all air.

Re: Groaning

I agree with Frango100 if the pump was running low/empty it definitely makes a groaning noise, and may in fact now be damaged. ( it will make that noise when the wheel is turned enough to activate the pumps valves, whether the tires are moving or not) I'm confused because you say the noise is coming from the back.
you say you don't know much about car repair you can check the oil and transmission fluid condition by pulling the dipsticks and looking at whats there, if you are comfortable working under the jeep you can also check the differentials and transfer case by removing the fill plugs if the fluids are hot it should dribble a bit when plug is removed indicating unit is full (cold level is just below fill hole, check level with allen wrench) if the fluids look very dirty or feel very gritty between your fingers the jeep may never have been maintained at all and it would be wise to return it.
If the fluids look reasonably clean its worth $100.US (40P) to have someone check it more thoroughly...worst case scenario... You have an independent opinion in writing stating the vehicle has problems, to hand the seller. Please note; Any one NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED should have a used vehicle indpendantly inspected as a condition of purchase.
on another note, the Differentials on some GCs need a gear oil additive, I'm not sure if absence of the additive would cause a noise or just cause the Limited Slip to malfunction.(and you can not tell if it (additive) is there by visual inspection)
I would also not wait to let the seller know there is a problem in case this is reason to want a refund.( would you really want another car from a guy that sold you a car you are returning)

Re: Groaning

Hi thanks for the idea.
The steering pump was bled of air after I filled it by keep going lock to lock a number of times.

The noise is definitely coming from the rear drivers side, which is what is totally confusing me, I have looked under the jeep and it looks in really good condition, nothing worn or showing rubbing problems.

I have informed the seller there is a problem and he said, he has already put too much money into the car, so he will not pay anymore out on it, but will refund my money and take the car back.

I will check the diffs today for oil, the TC is a new one so should be ok. It has just had an MOT, so if there was anything really bad, I am sure it would of been picked up on that, but, if I cant find out what is happening, I am stuffed.

Re: Groaning

Bear in mind mate an MOT isn't a good indictor of cars condition as such. A tester can't pull anything apart to look at it. So if the rear diff wasn't in good condition, the tester would likely never know.

Checking the fluid is really easy. Just prise off the plug, it should be level with the bottom of the hole. Oh and be prepared for the smell. Gear oil stinks! Diff oil will set you back around £24 per litre at the dealer and you may need LSD with it, about a fiver. It would be worth cleaning the diff out completely, there are some good how to's on you tube.

Re: Groaning

Not using the limited slip additive in the diff will cause some strange noises, what i have heard of, and mostly when making turns. But you would only need this if the diff has the vari-loc in it (so normally only for Quadra-Drive models). When i´m not wrong the noise comes from one of the rear tires, because it will slip. Uneven tire wear can also cause problems with the Quadra Drive system. Do you know why the T-case was changed?

Re: Groaning

Checked the diff oil, it was the right level as a bit dribbled out, it was light brown in colour, it didn't smell?
The T case was changed as the engine light came on and the dealers took to his mechanic and he passed it onto a gearbox specialist who changed it, it does look very new.
My jeep does have Quadra-drive I just noticed the big sign all over the rear door!

I understand about the MOT, but if anything was wrong with the suspension, brakes or chassis or mounting points for anything they would notice.

Re: Groaning

The T case was probably goosed. That being the case it would be fairly safe to assume the rest of it hasn't been well looked after.

You would very likely get a noise if there's no additive in the fluid. Fresh diff fluid is an almost golden colour and reeks in my opinion.

How bad is the groan? Some diffs are just noisy. Can you feel anything when driving?

Don't feel anything when driving, there is a little bit of a whine from the back end around 70 but apart from that it drives really well.

If it's just a bit whiney, it's possible it's fine. I have come across diffs doing that before and the was nothing wrong with them.

Re: Groaning

I think the best is to take the car to an independent mechanic for a technical checkup. Depending on his findings you can better decide to keep the car or take an other. It will probably cost some money, but at the end it can safe you a lot as well.

Re: Groaning

Just got back from the garage where it had a full service, new back pads and a rear diff oil change

Took it for a test drive and the noise is............................................stil l there!

Going to the garage tomorrow to see if they added the friction additive or if they only added the oil

Whatever they say, I am going to add a bottle of the additive to the rear diff and see if that helps, if it doesn't, well I can see me having a burning car sat in my drive for a few minutes till someone calls the fire brigade.
