have a 42re and need help

Let me start by saying hello. Ok my wife has a 200 jeep grand cherokee that is 4x2 and reverse quit working, having problems finding a tranny for it in the junkyards near me. So my question is can you make 4x4 42re tranny work by changing the tailshaft?

Re: have a 42re and need help

Possible, but wouldn't be cost effective, as you would need 4.7 front axle so you have a open diff and not locked all the time like on your Laredo..

I know I can run a laredo transfer case on my 4.7 with appropriate shafts but trans swapping or modifying idk

Re: have a 42re and need help

I donīt have the experience on it myself, but the transmission should be the same. For the 4x2 it has a tail housing bolted to it, which connects directly to the rear propeller shaft. If you would buy one with 4x4, it has the adapter housing to connect to the T-case. You should be able to remove the adapter housing and connect the tail housing from your old transmission.

Re: have a 42re and need help

There is a all time 4x4 42rfe and a part time 42rfe on a 4.0? At this point it should just be the rear section that is different,

There is no 42RE specially made 4x2 or 4x4. The difference is the tail part of the transmission, or a straight tail housing which connects directly to the rear propeller shaft, or an adapter housing which connects to the t-case.

The 42 is an RE and not RFE. 4x4 part time, full time or whatever which time doesnīt depend on the transmission, but sollely on the T-case.
Changed your mind on your previous answer???

So early grand Cherokee used 42re

I think you have misread his first post. He wants to buy a 42RE from a 4x4 to put on his jeep with 4x2. His question was if this would work out. He never pretended to put a 5-45RFE on. The 4.0 only has the 42RE, independed on the year.
