Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Hi All,
Sorry to start my post off with a plea for assistance, but then I'm guessing that is why most of us are here.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7L engine. It had a blown head gasket and since the engine had 190,000 + miles I replaced the engine with a lower mileage salvage engine. I've installed the new engine. I've tried to start the engine, but I'm not getting any fuel into the fuel rail. I did have plenty of pressure prior to the engine swap. Also, I notice that I have a flashing yellow key symbol on the dash. I wondering if I need to do a PCM reflash? If so, how is that done? I appreciate any help / advice.

Thanks,
Scott Firebaugh

Welcome to the garage.
Did you change the PCM as well? If so, then it needs to be programmed with the SKIM secret code.
But still the engine should start, but shut down after 3 seconds. Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you switch the ignition to run? The pump should work for 3 seconds and shut off when the engine is not started.

Re: Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Thanks for the fast reply. I didn't do a PCM swap, so it has the original in it. I don't hear the pump running when I turn the key on. I do have a new battery with a full charge on it that I'm using.

Thanks for the assist.

Re: Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Did you check for blown fuses? All connectors are in place and all grounds are ok? I will have a look into the wiring schematic and see if i can come up with something else.

Re: Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Thanks appreciate it. I haven't looked for blown fuses, since it was running when I started the swap. Also, I have a yellow image of a key with a line through it that lights up on the dash when I try to start the engine. Is that a security issue? None of the gauges work (i.e. tach) when I try to start it.

Again many thanks,
Scott

Re: Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Yes, the yellow key image is from the SKIS (security key immobilizer system). A flashing key symbol normally means that it is seeing an invalid key, but since you have more problems, i donīt think that this is the case now. Not having the gauges working, is a sign that the PCM is not sending any information via the PCI data bus. Voltage indicator will stay at 0, fuel level at empty, no rpm indication when cranking. Also that the fuel pump doesnīt work, points towards the PCM. I would check the fuses #6 (30A), #19 (10A) and # 26 (15A) in the PDC under the hood, and see if they are not blown. It seems that the PCM is dead, so or it is a power supply, or a ground or the PCM itself.

Re: Hi All - Problems with an engine swap

Frank,
I double checked my grounds and realized that I hadn't grounded my PCM. I grounded it and the Jeep started right up. Now I just need to button up the cooling system and power steering system and should have it on the road.

I can't thank you enough for the advice given me. It paid off greatly. Again, many thanks.
Scott
