Hunting down a P0174 problem

Hi all,

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SE, 4.0, 2wd.


thus far i've replaced the following:
1. Plugs
2. Fuel Filter
3. Bank 2 Sensor 1 02 sensor (no voltage reading from live data)

My next step is to test fuel pressure. However there isn't a test port on the fuel rail. How can i test fuel pressure?

How about something as basic as a vacuum leak check all rubber line for breaks...also spray water ,carb clean or wd-40 along intake manifold...you should get a change in rpms .when u spray the liquid.....fuel pressure gage on fuel rail theres a fitting....not sure 24-30psi pat...

Thanks for the suggestion Patty.

I think i just found the issue. While observing live data on all four 02 sensors, Bank 2 Sensor 1 showed .000 volts. I unplugged the sensor and tested it on the car with a volt meter. Sensor is fluctuating voltage when accelerating.

So something is wrong with a connector, wire, or the computer it self.

Suggestions/Comments?

Im not sure where those wires run, but I know that I have found the harness that runs around the back of the cylinder head, one of the cylinderhead bolts in the rear has a stud on the head of it and the harness can fall down over the stud, enough time and vibration it will work through the tape and make its way into the convoluted tubing and start scratching up wires. Seen it before on an injector circuit fault code. BTW, I was almost certain it was from that area and KNOWING i had damage somewhere in the area, and knowing what wire i needed to inspect by color it still took me about 10 minutes to find the exact point where the short to ground was happening because it was SO tiny.

Hi Andrew,

You are correct. When monitoring live data on 02 sensor, i tapped the wire trough, sure as heck, got a reading off of B1S2.

Just to be certain we are talking about the same location. I've attached a diagram. The section in red that houses S106, S107, and 109 is what you are/were referring to?

In your situation, did you just splice in a new section of wire? Or something else.

The position for the damage was on the head bolt sticking up just to the left of injector 6 connector on your diagram. It runs over the transmission and hugs that corner of the cylinderhead.

ultimately when I found the one I had, the harness was too tight to get it out, I would have had to dissassembly much of the harness and spliced in a new long section... Considering the severity of the situation, the insulation had litterally JUST been nicked through, I cleaned the area, installed some liquid electrical tape to seal the wire up and then used some harness tape (like a cloth electrical tape) to wrap up the conviluted tubing very well, I then did what I could to position the harness away from the bolt. Worked like a champ!
