Ive been knowing it was coming and just got the part today. Quit completely today! When I go to do this repair how should I proceed. I have the security torx bit and ALMOST all the know-how. Is there a write-up on this somewhere? Could not find using search. My main concern is when I get to the ignition swtch and the cover that holds in that pin assembly. Thanks
In case anyone is following this post, I learned a great deal about the steering coloumn, the ignition switch, multi-function switch, key lock cylinder and SKIM system as well as the actuator itself. Turns out the factory unit wasn't broken and is much more well manufactured than one might be led to believe. Ended up sending the cheap plastic Dorman replacement part back to Amazon and replaced the starter like I should have in the first place. If nothing else, I learned a few things and got some fancy new torx security bits in the process.
Hit me up if anybody wants more details.
Good that you have solved your problem. But why did you think that the problem was in the ignition switch. In your case the starter relay in the PDC should have made a cli king sound when trying to start, showing already that the ignition switch is working.
Yeah, it did but for some reason the sheer randomness of the no crank condition made me want to believe it wasn't that 14 y.o. factory starter. I guess I didn't understand how it all worked, but I sure do now. Ha.
The starter on my 2001 JGC Limited has been replaced two or three times now since i've had it 10 years. luckily, after the first one, the second two were still under warranty when they failed.
