Intermittent ABS Light

99 WJ 4.7L

So my ABS seems to be failing.... usually when I first start the car, the light is NOT lit... but after I drive down the road a mile or two, it comes on. For some odd reason, it seems to come on after I go over a big bump. It basically stays on for the rest of my drive and the rest of the day. It also seems to come on less frequently in cool weather.

The ABS does work fine when the light isn't on... when the light is ON, it doesn't work at all.

Any thoughts? I took it to a shop and they said the ABS computer is failing and wanted $800+ to replace it.... no thanks.

Re: Intermittent ABS Light

Could be a problem with the wheel speed sensors, stop at an auto parts store when the light is on and have them read the codes from it (usually for free) . One could be dirty, loose, or failing.

Re: Intermittent ABS Light

To clarify, it is the ABS light, not the check engine light that comes on... I guess I didn't realize the ABS light will store codes...

Re: Intermittent ABS Light

Yep, the ABS module will store codes. I have an Actron CP9580 and it will pull and clear them, I had an issue with a wheel speed sensor code.

Re: Intermittent ABS Light

Is it easy to spot these wheel sensors? Can you give an idea of where they are located? Maybe I can inspect each and see if I have something loose, etc. That would explain why it is coming on when I go over a bump.

Re: Intermittent ABS Light

I'm sorry but I couldn't find a picture yet. Look for a gear on the back side of the hub with a small black sensor pointing towards it. The sensor basically senses speed by counting the number of teeth that go by. Follow the wire and make sure the connector is secure and make sure there's no debris on the sensor or gear teeth.
