Intermittent coolant leak and overheating

I have 2004 JGC LTD with the 4.7HO and have suffered an overheating problem. I filled with coolant ( a full gallon!) and bled the system. Drove fine until today when I was idling the motor while checking the trailer electrics. When I went around the front there was a significant coolant leak leaving a large puddle on the ground under the radiator. Overflow was at the correct level. Can't see where the leak is coming from but dripping from the area above the chrome sump guard. I would appreciate some insight on this issue.

Re: Intermittent coolant leak and overheating

The radiator is common to create cracks at the seam between plastic tank and aluminum core. Take care to not overheat this engine, because it will warp the heads and/or cause valve seats to drop.

Re: Intermittent coolant leak and overheating

I would guess the core of the radiator is going bad. I replaced the radiator shortly after picking up my Columbia Edition. There are pics in my thread in the general WJ section.

Re: Intermittent coolant leak and overheating

I eventually found the leak. It is coming from the radiator. I have ordered the Spectra Premium and new hoses and t/stat from Rockauto. $165 delivered. Pretty good price. Shop states 3.1 hours to do the job at $414 for labor. Sound about right? Local shop not a dealer.
